Real world performance of iShares iBonds (defined-maturity bond ETFs)

Post by mega317 »

This was inspired by a specific thread: https://bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=379983 as well as my curiosity about the behavior of these maturing bond funds.

Yesterday I purchased 1 share each of the funds discussed in the linked thread as well as the treasury fund of the same duration for comparison. I am also making note of the treasuries maturing around the same time:

Code: Select all

                      NAV SECYield
IBDQ Inv-gr corp 24.55 3.84%
IBMN Municipal 26.44 2.02%
IBTF Treasury 23.72 2.95%

Code: Select all

                      Price Yield Maturity(2025)
91282CAZ4 Note 90.234 3.408 11/30
91282CBC4 Note 90.031 3.402 12/31
912828M56 Note 96.359 3.393 11/15
9128285N6 Note 98.328 3.394 11/30
9128285T3 Note 97.515 3.379 12/31
912833LX6 STRIP 89.637 3.247 11/15
912820Y43 STRIP 89.709 3.223 11/15
I’ll be interested to see how the dividends and final distributions of the ETFs turn out, and how the return compares to these treasuries.
A link to this post is on my google calendar for December 31, 2025, and I will provide periodic updates along the way.

Following this thread for curiosity sake. I am using iShares defined maturity ETFs as a portion of my ladder based on prior performance compared to expectations (link below for case study) and I am curious to see how the this real-time study goes.

Interesting! IBDQ and IBTF are exactly the funds I’m using in my (child’s) UTMA account.
