Two Fund Portfolio - VTSAX and VTIAX

Post by Investor1319 »

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't seem to find the answer. Until now, I've held VTSAX in my IRA and in a taxable account and have no other investments other than this. I now have the savings to expand to a two fund portfolio and was thinking of investing in VTIAX in a taxable account. Would you make your second fund VTIAX? or VBTLX? Do you see anything wrong or too risky only holding VTSAX as a one fund portfolio or even including VTIAX and keeping a two fund portfolio without ever adding VBTLX? I am in my early 50's and am late to saving/investing. I'm sure most of you know the answer to this question, but I'm trying to learn - - if Jack Bogle was against holding an international index fund, why do Bogleheads include holding VTIAX in their three fund portfolio suggestion?

Thanks so much!
