What's your average purchase price into SP500 since market drop?

Post by teddytimtam » Wed Mar 25, 2020 5:12 am

I've DCA (randomly) into the market (SP500) over the past 3+ weeks...

Looking at contributions made since late-Feb, the average SP500 price paid is equivalent @ 2730. This is roughly -20% from the high.

1) What's your average purchase price into SP500 since market drop?
2) I can't help but feel that I "lost" out on potential gains since the market has dropped to nearly -40% from the high earlier this week (which I did not buy at). And the current price is -20% from my average purchasing price
3) What can I do to continue maximizing my gains?
4) Is this too much into market timing?

I have not randomly rebalanced nor DCA'd in the past few weeks. I have used the RBD method to decide which days I should try to make rebalancing adjustments. I have noted by posting days when I have rebalanced in other threads on the forum. So far, the shares of VTI that I have purchased are down 0.83%. Of course, those shares would be down a lot more if the gains of yesterday did not happen or if I had bought more on different days.

My current asset allocation to stocks is 58.4% according to Vanguard Portfolio Watch. This is within a percent of my desired allocation that I have posted before in this thread back in 2014: viewtopic.php?t=150267 I had to buy quite a lot of VTI to rebalance last week and I had to sell US bond index shares at a slight loss to do so. There was nothing random about what I did. I followed my plan.

BTW, the market did not drop nearly 40% since its high in February, but it still has a chance to do so.

2400-2500.

Eyeballing my purchases in the last 3 weeks below gives me about $120-122 for VTI which is about 2400-2500 for S&P.

5K VTI at $132.00
10K VTI at $125.09
7.5K VTI at 119.22
7.5K VTI at 115.30
5K VTI at 110.30

I have one more 5K lot set to sell if S&P hits around 2000.

This 50K was money I was saving for a 2nd investment property or perhaps a different primary residence in the future. My emergency fund is still in tact. All other accounts are fully invested at a 80/20 split and I haven't sold anything.

I’m not tracking it. I bought some SCV after closer to a 10% decline and now it’s over 40%, oh well it wasn’t much and I’ve since bought much more. Buy some VIOV on the next dip and you’ll feel like you got a better deal overall ;).

I'm not tracking it myself either, but since I have only purchased in one single account and only purchased VTI, my broker gives me the number whenever I look.

I do have an HSA mentioned in this thread and it is actually UP for 2020 due to help with market timing from Bogleheads.org. Indeed, Bogleheads.org may be the best market timing web site for mere mortals known to mankind.

I should also point out that anybody who bought VTI yesterday after its +9.5% one-day pop would have done even better than I have reported here.

That's hard to compute. I'm buying VTSAX, VTIAX, FXAIX, and FSMAX in various accounts. My target for international equities is 28% of equity position.

I can get rough idea by just looking at total purchase amounts and SP500 close that day. But TSM isn't 100% the same as SP500 and international is off by more. Since not all the shares are covered, computing exact gain/loss is more bother than I'm willing to put in right now.

Code: Select all

	2/27 $25k S&P 2978
	2/28 $12.5k S&P 2954
	3/9 $25k S&P 2746
	3/13 $12.5k S&P 2711
	3/16 $25k S&P 2386
	3/20 $75k S&P 2305 (rebalance from VBTLX)

rough average 2525 - new money down roughly 3% as of yesterdays close
I've adjusted my plan in a way that would avoid the 2/27 trade in a rerun of this situation. That outlier definitely was too soon and would have been too soon in late 2018 as well.
