How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?

Post by mk1039 » Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:29 am

i just thought to see how people are doing with their investments in stock market.

i had 458k on Feb 20,2020. now 358k.....so down 100k (22%) as of today. in my taxable account.

i am not making any changes. most of my money is in 25 different large cap stocks. i remember at the end of 2018 when everything went down but then went up quickly...so hoping for the same.

I just checked the numbers. Portfolio hit an all time high of $837k on Feb. 20. After close today with everything updated as of 8pm PST, the total is $795k, down exactly 5%. I made a few timely purchases of EDV, TLT, and SDS in my taxable and Blink (401k) accounts and also got out at the right time during this 3 week madness which has significantly helped cushion the blow. The totals are across my 401k, Roth, HSA, and taxable.

You can call it part dumb luck, part strategic thinking that I bailed out of both EDV and TLT on Monday near their all time highs, and also sold SDS today (looks like I should’ve held that one).

Very fortunate to be down only 5%, things are closer to 40-60 now, lots of cash parked in ICSH and the stable value fund in my 401k. There are way too many unknowns at this time, so I have no plans to do much of anything for a while. I think we could be down 40-50% by the time this bloodbath is over, and who knows how long it takes to get it all back.

I’m staying my course, and that means being very conservative now and going forward.

-$46k on $349k or 13%. 75/25 with 30% intl.

That takes me back to Oct 2019 levels. My contributions are doing the driving right now. Buying more with next paycheck...17 years to go.

I thought that too. But without percentage & $$$ amount, I can't figure it without knowing what one is invested in.

Could be short TVIX. Or long TQQQ.

5 million :annoyed
Moving 1million from muni into Total US Stock today.
Plan to move another 1 million if sp500 falls further to 2400 (-30% lower than all time highs)
During this market panic, buying helps calm my emotions.

Hi,

Question - so you are shifting your assets from munis to stocks and thus shifting bonds : stock ratio. I was 'told' not to do that and keep my AA constant no matter what the market was doing. Is that not right? Just curious because I just shifted my AA from 70-30 to 60-40 recently and wondered if I should move it back to 70-30 by exchanging Total US Bond to Total US Stock?
Thanks

I shifted asset allocation based on what I think is an opportunity to buy more shares of the market at a discount to what I think they will be in 1 year. If my portfolio was half the size I would not be doing this, out of concern for needing to sell equities at a loss (sequence of return risk).

I prefer to stay 70/30, but am currently 90/10, after making 3 purchases, at minus 9%, minus 13%, and minus 19%, of the sp500.

I am going to 95/5 at sp500 2600, and 100/0 at sp500 2400. I am only ok doing this because the dividends alone are enough to live on and put me in the second highest tax bracket by themselves.

Plan is to go back to 70/30 when sp500 is at all time highs again (3400).

What do you mean by "out of concern for needing to sell equities at a loss (sequence of return risk).?"
Do you mean that you would need to sell equity IF you needed cash?

We're down 20.3% since February 20, but that wasn't the top for us. We're down 22% since February 12 and 24% since January 17. Ex-US, particularly EM, started dropping earlier than US. We also have a small and value tilt, which has fallen more than US LCG.

We've lost about 2 years of my salary with bonus, 4-5 years of contributions. But we're both only 50, so we'll keep buying. I think it'll look like a good buying opportunity in a few years.

Yes I normally live on equity dividends only plus selling 1% of equity each year, for a total 2.7 - 3.0% portfolio withdrawal rate. I typically have the tax exempt muni fund dividends reinvested monthly.
If I only owned half as much equity shares, I would still need to sell the same amount of shares, but it would effectively be a higher withdrawal rate which I prefer to avoid.

I like this research paper, saying Buffetts 90/10 is similar in safety if one can control emotion: https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/f996/ ... aff2be.pdf
When compared to other static allocations, the 90/10 split suggested by Buffett performs well in terms of the failure rate, upside potential, and downside pro- tection. In fact, it provides a middle ground between the upside potential of more aggressive static allocations and the downside protection of more conservative static.
I’m still not there yet on being OK at 90/10 100% of the time, but feel ok at 70/30 with shifting allocation temporarily to more stocks.

Down $340k on all investments combined as of last night but I fear it is going to get worse today.

One retirement account portfolio is at 65/35 and the other is 80/20 but I've decided to change the second also to 65/35 given I am less than 5 years from retirement. Just trying to get the nerve up to pull the trigger.

Update as of 3/24- Down $548k on all investment accounts but yesterday was a $106k uptick so the bottom of my V has so far been $654k down.

Still have my monthly Roth 403b contributions allocated to 80/20 though even though I'm less than 5 years from retirement as I'm over a decade from being 72.

As I watched coronavirus unfold in China in January-February, I couldn't understand how the market kept going up. All these stories about enforced quarantine, social disruption, stoppage of productivity, the high mortality and R0 of the disease. Why wasn't this being priced in? I have always followed the Bogleheads philosophy of staying the course, so I did nothing. Finally, on the weekend of Feb 22/23, the disconnect between the market and my expectations about the spread that was coming got to be too much, and I decided go from 100% stocks to 0%. Too bad trades only go through at the close of weekdays. I lost 3% on Feb 24 before I could sell. I've been in stable value since then though. Total return for the year is -0.02%. I'll take it. 8-)

This episode has changed my view about basic market theory -- that everything is always priced in, and an individual investor can never expect to beat the market. That may be true for lots of technical information, but in this day and age there is so much Fake News and cultural/political BS that can be seen through and acted on.

I looked yesterday, saw I was down about $50k and it made me start feeling slightly anxious. So, I saw today's drop and decided not to look at my portfolio again. I just remember that this is a blip in the remaining 25+ year investing horizon I anticipate and that my AA is appropriate given how far I am from my draw-down phase. Then I spent some time on a gratitude meditation and felt better. 8-)

Current as of 3-12-2020
Domestic Stock 32%
Foreign Stock 4%
Bonds 40%
Short Term 24% (cash and cd)
Other 0%

Down About $20,000. All in non taxed accounts IRA. I can live with social security and pension. Thinking now is time to shift half of short term and bonds into stocks. Good idea?

Don't know, and don't care.
I check my monthly ending portfolio balances by reading my snail mail.
My 40% in bond index funds may now be up from about a decade of spending to a dozen years of spending at current valuations.
I like my pension these days, better than when I was working at that stressful job for 30 years.
With my 40 years of stock market exposure, it is just another crash.

-1.7% since Jan 1, (401a & 403b) but I have a pretty conservative AA.
Curious, what is it

Retired last year.

Since Jan 1, 2020
Down 7.5%
AA 42% equities 58% fixed
Happy that 2.5 yrs expenses are in cash.

Staying the course

Since I was planning on moving to 40 % Equities 60% Fixed the declines are automagically rebalancing for me.

Down $15k on a portfolio of what’s now $1.08 million.

Pulled out on the first bad stock day of Coronavirus season. My stocks lost more than $15k but my gold and bonds did better that day. I sold everything including the gold and bonds into cash before market closed.

Now the hard part is figuring out when to get back in. But I’d rather have that problem than being in. We’re going to be dealing with this for weeks or months so lots of chances.
