Tax Loss Harvest - How do I see the loss?

Post by BHawks87 »

I put the order in today for a mutual fund and sold about 6 lots. Do I have to wait until tomorrow to see how much the loss is based on the close price or is there a way to find it now?

In Excel? One should independently calculate the tax loss harvested at the market close price. Vanguard will show the amount of realized loss the day after the transaction.

You can calculate it now. Look at the closing price of what you sold. I assume you know the basis of the shares sold.

Cost basis is redundant. One has a basis in an investment | One advises and gives advice | One should follow the principle of investing one's principal

If you look at the unrealized losses, that should give you some idea of what you actually realized, assuming you sold/exchanged all of the unrealized losses today.

But waiting a day is easier.

That's great! I'd link my Vanguard guide if I thought it wouldn't get me in trouble. :beer

I've only TLH at Schwab and at the end of the year, they'll send a summary that includes this.
