ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK)

Post by milosz19 » Tue Jan 14, 2020 6:16 pm

Hello,

What do Bogleheads think of ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK)? Of course, I am not asking whether this ETF should constitute the core of one's portfolio. But, what about 5-10% to potentially beat the broader market?

Do any of you hold this ETF? If so, why?

I own it. Less than 5% of portfolio. Just for kicks.

I own this ETF in my play account. I love ARK funds... also check out ARKG. I’m passionate about innovation and I’d like spreading out my risk across companies. I have a lot of faith in the fund manager Catherine Wood as well.

Anyone remember the Internet Fund, with manager Paul Meeks that fell 70% or so in 2000/2001 ?

Now the ARKK stocks (10% holding in Tesla) aren't quite so speculative as the dotcom era stocks , but still

Interesting, I was not even aware of those other ARK ETFs. What other ARK funds do you like?

Wasn’t it called the Net Net Fund? I was a financial advisor then and I can remember clients insisting I put them in it.

Those were crazy times. Sort of feels like that now, to be honest.

I think Net Net was another fund, but yes those were crazy times. I don't think the current times are as bad because most of the unicorns are still private.

Added: Yes, Net Net was another fund, manager Paul Cook. I think I may have been thinking about that one rather than the Internet fund, actually.

“the flagship fund dove 54%, followed by a 48% loss in 2001 and a 45% decline in 2002. Between the investment losses and investors yanking their money out, NetNet shrank to $1 billion in late 2001 — and was reopened to new accounts, as Munder laid off 31 people, or 11% of its staff.”

And there was also a mini boom of biotech stocks at that time, what with the Human Genome being decoded. Celera etc.

Check out the Ark funds webpage and you can see the holding for each fund. I like ARKK and ARKG (personal interest in innovative health), but I’m also intrigued by the Fintech fund (ARKF) and industrial innovation (ARKQ).

Is this the firm that has Cathie Wood for a CEO? Her appearances on CNBC are... interesting. She has a $4000 price target for TSLA and gets lots of twitter mentions.
Understand that choosing an HDHP is very much a "red pill" approach. Most would rather pay higher premiums for a $20 copay per visit. They will think you weird for choosing an HSA.
