I'm confused. Isn't Merrill Edge a brokerage account? If so, it's basically the same as a brokerage account at Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwab, ... Right?

If that's the case, then one can invest in almost anything, no?

Yeah this is all obvious, but I'm going to take a stab that the OP wants to move $ into ME to get a bonus. Then buy a Vanguard fund that's low cost and wants to know if there are drawbacks to this method. Just a guess.

Not confused at all.
My previous thread asked:
So Merrill Edge has VFIAX and VBTLX. Which means you can have a pretty low expense ratio 2 fund portfolio. Is there a catch?
This thread is asking:
What are you invested in.

Merrill Edge is brokerage account, hence buying Vanguard incurs a fee of 19.99. There are alternatives such as NTF mutual funds. Some people will do vanguard others will do NTF mutual funds. This is different from Fidelity and Vanguard, especially for people who choose to keep less than 50k.

Given the info, I am not sure ME is a good platform for you. I think Fidelity and Schwab are more suitable since they have their own version of board based index mutual funds. ME will only make sense to you if you buy ETFs. I have board based index ETFs in ME.

You can easily have a diversified portfolio at Merrill Edge without using traditional mutual funds.

For example, a two fund portfolio: VT and VGSH.

Or if you like total market investing for bonds, replace VGSH with BND or BNDW.

If you want TIPS, add SCHP or VTIP.

Op,

I own only ETFs in either Merrill Edge or Fidelity.

Very convient, cheap ($0 trades) and portable.

I have a pretty boring and simple portfolio these days.

Do you really want to know the holding details?

If I were at ME and wanted Vanguard products, I would not hesitate to buy VTI, VEA and BND and be done with it. Added bonus that if at some point, XYZ broker offered a huge bonus to move, all of these would be able to move with no issues.

You can buy Vanguard ETFs commission free at ME. I own mostly iShares right now, but that is by choice. I TLH'd out of Vanguard earlier in the year when the market saw a small drop.

$0 fee etfs as pointed out.

Or buy elsewhere and just transfer in the assets.
I transferred in $100k for Platinum Honors - mostly a muni bond fund ladder I'd bought elsewhere.

I use AOR (iShares Core Growth Allocation 60/40). 1 ETF to invest and forget.

I own a bit over 100k of ETFs from VG, Schwab and ishares. The main purpose of this account is the BofA platinum honors perks, particularly the 2.65% credit I receive on purchases. These funds are simply parked there and I transfer the dividends out for reinvestment in my mutual funds at VG. On a couple of occasions I have transferred highly appreciated shares out to my DAF, and ME was quite efficient in this process.

VTI- Vanguard Total US Stock Market ETF
SPTS- State Street Short Term Treasury ETF.
Understand that choosing an HDHP is very much a "red pill" approach. Most would rather pay higher premiums for a $20 copay per visit. They will think you weird for choosing an HSA.

About 100k in random ETF’s and a few individual stocks.

I used mostly vanguard ETF’s, but switched some to ishares for loss harvesting / cost basis reasons. Right now it’s mostly ITOT, BSV, IDEV, EMG. The stocks are small positions I hold for silly sentimental reasons (e.g., a few shares of Berkshire B class).

Merrill Edge holds my tax deferred, which is primarily in BND, BSV, CDs, and individual USTs with a sprinkle of VTI and VXUS.

Where do you find brokered CDs on ME? I can’t seem to find any.
