What to do with my money

Post by Oneworld82 » Fri Aug 09, 2019 6:44 am

Hi all!

I posted last a year ago after writing off a loss of 5k in the stock market. Well, one year after that cumulative loss is now 35k and I am the point where I am tired of penny stocks and want something different.

I am 37, earn ~150k, while my wife is 25 and earns ~60k. We expect our income to grow (my wife’s to double) in the next few years. I plan to retire no earlier than 65 or later (depending on health. I’d like to have 10 good years to just travel).

We have two cars paid off, and a mortgage whose balance is 128k. No credit card debts but some other small debts averaging $500/month at 2% interest. We save about 4.5-5k a month AFTER contributing to our 401k (13% plus company match) and maxing out my ROTH IRA. As we were setting up our family, we really started saving hard outside our retirement accounts in the past 2 years, and have now about 80k in the bank/investments (that’s after the 30k loss in the past year for the stupid investments I made).

So my question is: what should I do with the money I have and do you think we are in good shape financially? We like to have nice dinners out a couple times a year, and we spend about 5-6k on travel/year. We also have two young daughters.

Our long term goals are to buy a second home in Europe and a sailboat down the road.

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice on how to make our savings grow and not shrink!

In your previous post, you stated that you're mid 40's. Before I suggest anything, I'm interested in how you managed to become younger.

In a previous post he also stated that he would be 68 when his wife is 60, making them 8 years apart versus the 12 years he claims now.

Yeah, that both discounts & makes everything posted suspect.
Good luck though.

Not to derail this thread any further, but while I am perfectly ok with altering the facts a bit for the sake of privacy, the extent of the difference in posted ages is enough to significantly change the advice one would receive. That makes very little sense unless the OP is posting on behalf of many different people.

...or trolling.
