Right, stocks fall on uncertainty and right now the trade/tariff situation is uncertain.

put down cnbc and enjoy what's left of your weekend. It's Sunday for pity's sake.

Well, on Friday, every one of my stocks, mutual funds, and ETFs were up that day. I never thought I would see that happen. Markets at all time highs. Friday was a bit too good to be true, not surprising markets would be down on Monday. But futures markets can all turn on a dime. Wouldn't worry about this. Pretty normal behavior.

If you haven’t bought stocks because the market was too hot and “near all time highs“, then tomorrow may be a buying opportunity. There may be a sale.

You just busted my bubble. I was high-fiving my wife about FIRE this weekend. Now I have Sunday blues.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

*yawn* How many times has Mr. Market reacted to "looming trade deal" news? And what by Wednesday or Thursday there will be rumours that we are close to a deal and we get a 2-3 day run back to where we are? Traders must love this...

I'm sitting on too much cash. I'd like to buy some stocks tomorrow :)
Hopefully that cash is recent, since VTI would have to drop about 20% to get as low as it was during the December Massacre (which nobody called it .....). :P

Still kicking myself for not buying then  Currently, I'm DCAing on the drops. Not sure this technique is recommended but I can't bring myself to throw all the extra cash in at once (in case of another December massacre).

Agree that this isn't a major market move, but can't share the cavalier attitude. When off-the-cuff political decisions cost me thousands of dollars at a moment's notice, it is hard to just go watch a TV show and forget about it. The silver lining is that, eventually, some deal will be made and then stocks will rally. Too bad that all this volatility had to happen for a year+ in the interim.

Your attitude only makes sense to me if you believe this is the beginning for something long term, meaning years. Short term volatility is opportunity in my book.

Why do you think a deal will be made? China has had massive import tariffs for decades.

Those off-the-cuff decisions cut both ways, so you realize you'd lose the upside if you lost the downside?

In the news: China is considering canceling their trade meeting this week in relaliation to Trump's threat

So, it looks like this fiasco may drag on for a while, perhaps next few months...

Wouldn't be the worse thing to deal with. A short term pullback would give some opportunity to buy at lower levels without doing significant damage to others.

Der Tarifmann hath spoken.

Most world languages have nouns that are either masculine or feminine. German goes them one better and adds a third gender: neuter. The masculine definite article (“the”) is der, the feminine is die, and the neuter form is das. German speakers have had many years to learn whether wagen (car) is der or die or das.

I'm just going to leave this here:

DOW on May 5, 2009: 8,410.65
DOW on May 5, 2019: 26,504.95

S&P 500 on May 5, 2009: 903.80
S&P 500 on May 5, 2019: 2,945.64.

I am so unconcerned about the DOW dropping 500 points it is concerning.

I would appreciate another ZERO on that drop. May this 500 point drop turn into 5000 point, or if Market Gods willing, 10000 point drop.

It's not just about points dropping, too much of a drop causes all sorts of knock on effects... the wealth effect fades, people start tightening spending, that affects other things, corporations pull back on new projects due to sentiment etc. Infact, this was quite evident in tech last Dec. when a lot of companies froze new projects due to concern on where the market was going.

So yes, market drops may not be of any concern to long term buy and hold investors, it does concern those of us who are in the work force and dependent on jobs to accumulate our wealth.

I am pretty sure if the DOW goes under 25,000, I reserve the right to never be happy again and complain about all of the money I have lost and how we are heading for a bear market. Also, if I buy then, I will say I bought it at a dip at a serious discount even though it is maybe 1% off.

Good thing I am due to invest some of my paycheck tomorrow into the market - and I might get a sale price?

I look at "fear" days as opportunities to buy (more). And I do nothing on "greed" days.

And by the way, there are only two kinds of days in the market: fear and greed.

So yes, market drops may not be of any concern to long term buy and hold investors, it does concern those of us who are in the work force and dependent on jobs to accumulate our wealth.
Do some research on how frequently the market drops 1% or more in single day. Not all that unusual.

I am so unconcerned about the DOW dropping 500 points it is concerning.

I am in the workforce and my wealth is dependent on my having a job. If a tech company such as Apple with over $250 billion in the bank or Google, Microsoft, etc, is concerned about small moves in the market when we have had a historic run up, then maybe something is amiss. My company did absolutely nothing. If the DOW falls below 20,000, I expect there will be changes but December was such a small blip on the screen. No one will notice it five or ten years from now. I remember when the market went up or down 300 points everyday for what seemed like months back when that meant something.

Obviously not talking about a 1% drop in the markets, people are more concerned about something like December repeating, a 20% drop which does cause sentiment to change. I know this because it was echoed by several tech people in that month. I work in tech and know many hiring managers.

The corporate landscape is a lot more than just behemoths like Apple and Google... most don't work for those companies. Companies routinely lay off staff to boost their bottom line in a declining market. As I said market sentiment can affect everything, it is all interlinked in a consumer driven economy. December was unique because the market rebounded very quickly so not enough time for anyone to even react... however if the decline had continued and lingered on for many quarters I can bet you there would be an effect.

I removed an off-topic comment (political). This thread has run its course and is locked (topic exhausted, no longer discussion futures). See: Locked Topics
