Post by JoeRevere » Wed Mar 27, 2019 8:34 am

Below is a list of index funds currently offered by Fidelity (including fees). Wondering if anyone here can tell which funds duplicate (or include) each other. For example, Total Market Index Fund (FSKAX) would include Small, Mid and Large index funds, right? Just looking to whittle down this list. Thanks for any help!

Thank you for your reply. Looking for maximum diversity. Not sold on the 3 or 4 fund portfolio, though I don't want to buy 18 different index funds.

FSKAX gives you the total US market, FTIHX gives you the total international.

Why are you not sold on the 3 fund? It buys the entire world market. Are you looking for MEEEC (Mars Equity Explorer Extraterestrial Class) or something? Beyond owning the entire market, you can't be more diversified.

The 3 fund portfolio gives you maximum diversity in the least number of funds. I suppose you could add some junk bonds or something.

+ 1.

You can't get any broader diversification using Fidelity index funds.

Ticker = MEEEX, universe index fund, but not total universe. :happy

Joe, the 3-fund is very good; however, some people overweight REIT and/or small cap, but that isn't more diversified. Many also overweight U.S. Don't underestimate the power of the 3-fund portfolio.

If you want market weight, then the minimum number of funds is appropriate. The only reason to "slice and dice" is if you want to overweight some allocation. In spite of what some here proclaim, that is not wrong nor not Boglehead. But you should have a reason for your portfolio.

Agree, and one could keep a tilt very simple such as buying "3 funds" plus another 1 or 2 funds in a tilt.

For example tilting to small cap and mildly towards US with one added fund:

30% Fidelity® Total Market Index Fund ( FSKAX ) .015%
30% Fidelity® Total Intl Index Fund ( FTIHX ) .060%
30% Fidelity® US Bond Index Fund ( FXNAX) .025%
+
10% Fidelity® Small Cap Index Fund ( FSSNX ) .025%

Most of us really are not answering the OP's question but the reason is that there is a bunch of research to do that. May as well do that yourself if you want to build 6 or 8 funds for some reason. My allocation is currently a messy slice and dice with multiple tilts. I need a spreadsheet to keep track of it. I don't believe it is providing an advantage over the simplicity more often recommended here.
