TLH International, should I buy back original holding?

Post by 3-20Characters » Tue Nov 13, 2018 7:19 am

I TLH-ed over 31 days ago.

Sold all shares of: VTIAX - Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral Shares

Bought: VFWAX - Vanguard FTSE All-World ex-US Index Fund Admiral

My FTSE All-World ex-US holding is currently showing a short term loss. Any reason I shouldn’t sell it and repurchase my original holding of Total International?

I'm in the exact same situation other than I TLH into US total market. I'm holding off buying back into VTIAX for now only because I'm not sure I want international in my taxable account. It is my understanding that if you do buy back into your original holding (VTIAX) you could also add any losses from VTWAX toward this years tax loss.

There is one issue. Qualified dividends.

If you receive dividends on the shares, and you want the dividends to be qualified, you will need to hold on to those shares for 61 days. This is just the overall holding period, you don't have to hold it for 61 days before the dividend is granted.

It's not a big deal if you only harvested a few tax lots, but it is something to keep in mind in case you are in a very high regular tax bracket and it is important to you.
