What investment company does your employer use?

Post by Newenglandcowboy » Sun Sep 23, 2018 11:55 am

I’m part of a group with about 60 employees and 40 partners. Unfortunately our retirement plan is through a company that has high expenses. For example, their target retirement funds have a 1% expense ratio with a 4.5% load. I’m new-ish to the group and I want them to switch but I don’t know where to start. The ability to do self directed investing is important to a lot of members of the group as we have a lot of wannabe day traders. Does Vanguard have group plans? Schwab? The bookie down the street?
Thanks for the help!

Yep!

https://www.fidelity.com/retirement-ira ... 401k-plans
https://investor.vanguard.com/small-bus ... f-employed
https://www.schwab.com/public/schwab/in ... _401k_plan

One thing to consider is if your desired plan will allow an employee to roll in a traditional IRA. My understanding is that Vanguard 401k plans do not, at least for a solo 401k.

Good luck!

Megacorp has one of the largest plans in the nation, with billions under management. The custodian is Northern Trust. But that doesn't help you much.

T Rowe price through Megacorp. Fortunately its has some nice Vanguard offerings with .04 ER for TBM to .09 ER for 500 index.

My old firm used Fidelity. My spouse's firm uses TDAmeritrade and their 401(k) plan has many Vanguard index funds and even ETFs.

Ascensus-Vanguard. Vanguard uses Ascensus for small plan administration. They were great.

My Megacorp uses T. Rowe Price, decent target date funds, an ACWI-like fund at 0.05% and maybe the best bit: optional Schwab sub account.

Working with a small company switching to Vanguard Ascensus. I think around 60 employees is a sweet spot for them.

My current megacorp is using Vanguard institutional total market funds. Actually its the first 401k in years that is actually cheaper to use than holding similar funds through my IRAs. :beer

Megacorp uses Fidelity.

No total market index funds. A few low cost options but you need 5-6 funds to buy the market.

I use a .08% target date fund that matches my stock/bond ratio.

We have funds with a 2.35% and 1.51% expense ratio. A few others in the .5 to 1.0% range.

For a company that "could" do anything, the money handlers are still nibbling.

I work for a $20-40b company that uses fidelity for 401k, and Morgan Stanley for stock-based compensation.

Edit: our fidelity 401k has vanguard funds

Megacorp uses Fidelity but the investments are all low-cost index funds from BlackRock.
Megacorp's HSA also uses Fidelity with any of Fidelity's investment options to choose from (e.g. Fidelity index funds, iShares ETFS, Vanguard ETFs).
Wife's MegaUni uses Fidelity as well but the investments are all low-cost index funds from Vanguard.

My 401k is administered by Prudential. I was jettisoned over a year ago from my employer, but have kept my money there because of Vanguard Institutional Funds - Total Stock, Total International & Total Bond. 4th fund I hold there is a Stable Value Fund at 3.15%. $13 a quarter for Admin Fees for the whole shebang. Prudential has been easy to work with & I'm not in a hurry to transfer. But like others, thru Megacorp.

401k is through Fidelity, the funds come from a variety of sources, primarily index funds from Vanguard, Black Rock, Fidelity, Northern Trust CITs... a couple active funds from T Rowe Price, a company stock pool, and we are also offered the Fidelity 'Brokerage Link' which allows us trade in most ETFs.
