Tax loss harvesting??

Post by Himagg123 » Sun Aug 19, 2018 8:31 am

Hi all,
I have recently started to read about bogelhead forum and starting to invest on my own. I just opened a brokerage account at Vanguard last week.
I have very poor choices in last few years. Had a financial advisor who sold me whole life policy as an investment vehicle so I lost substantial amount of money. After reading various forums I am going to do 1035 exchange in to the Vanguard variable annuity or Fidelity variable annuity (FPRA annuity).

My questions:

1. Vanhuard has an option to invest in to VA: total stock market index (https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/ ... irect=true) and Fidelity has an option as well (http://fundresearch.fidelity.com/annuit ... mary/FXVLT)

Does any one know if these 2 funds are in same class as VTSAX for tax loss harvesting point of view?

2. Also does Schwab's SWTSX and VTSAX are considered similar or not? Meaning can I have SWTSX in my 401k and VTSAX in brokerage account and if I switch to some other fund from VTSAX. Will I still be able to tax loss harvest?

3. Similarlry VTI versus VTSAx

I will really appreciate your help

thanks

The Vanguard thing you linked to says it is the same as VTSAX.

Nobody knows. The IRS doesn't say. They technically follow different indexes -- one from Dow Joes & one from CRSP -- but nobody knows if the IRS considers those "substantially identical" or not. I'm inclined to think they are substantially identical, though.

VTI and VTSAX are the same thing.
