What % of your equity is int’l?

Informal survey - for US folks, how much of your equity holdings do you target to intl (ex-US)?

We are working on our IPS with a three fund portfolio and determining the AA that’s best for us. In doing our background research I’ve seen everything from 0-50% for intl as percentage of equity and just wanted to benchmark the group.

The reasons for holding a specific percentage of intl seem less clear to me than the straightforward logic of risk appetite for setting total stock and fixed income percentages in a portfolio.

Are you trying to do a consensus survey to determine your own international exposure percentage?☺ If you are, it may not be a bad strategy. I was at less than 10% for years, but switched to 30% last year. I would do more if my wife allowed it.

The answers you get here will be all over the place because it is relative to risk tolerance. Check out the discussion at viewtopic.php?p=3825763#p3825763

The current international market cap, 47.1%.

I believe if you're going to follow a philosophy like "own the market," you should actually do that.

1/3 for me, with 40% of that being small cap. I've thought of raising it to either 40 or 50 percent mainly based on the above chart, but I like the simplicity of my 1/3 s&p500, 1/3 domestic small cap, 1/3 international portfolio.

As an American living in Europe with an uncertain return, I am at 50% US and 50% international across all asset classes. I am happy being at 50% because of my residence abroad and my uncertain retirement location.

The current US equities market is approx 50% of the World equities market. A few years back it was approx 35%, but it has grown significantly % wise in the past few years.

43%, but that's because international equities dropped here in the past few weeks. I need to rebalance and buy more international equities.

Whatever the market cap weighting is.
I view this question like "what % of of your equity have you directed into megacap tech stocks, big oil, utilities and mid-cap value stocks?"
International equity is not a separate asset class and I'm not going to pretend like I'm some professional fund manager that knows better than the market on picking and weighting various slices of equity.

0% unless you count the approximation that 50% of the S&P's revenue is outside the United States. But for all intents and purposes I guess most here would consider it 0%

1. Enter appropriate terms in the google search box of this forum.

3. The best post I've ever seen on this forum re. this issue was a fairly recent one. It basically said that one household name expert had said the best allocation to intl. is between 0-20%, and the other expert had said the best allocation is between 20% and something higher. IIRC, the two experts named were Jack Bogle and Warren Buffett, but maybe I'm not remembering that right. Anyway, the upshot of the post was that hey, I'm not either of those guys. The one overlap they had was 20%, so I've been going with that. In my case, back when I chose, I wasn't aware of either of these "expert's" opinion; I was just going with my gut. As I said above, it's served me well. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, hahaha. :)

BTW, to the veteran BHs on the forum: If anyone here can provide OP with a link to the post I'm referencing in item #3 above, maybe that will help. Thanks!
See your item #1. :happy

Both Buffett and Bogle don't feel international is necessary for the average investor. So, you're not remembering that correctly. There's basically those two saying no need for INT and all the other experts saying everyone should have some INT. How much? Yeah, that's where it starts to vary.

Our international is 22% of equity. I'm OK with 20-30% and let it drift.

Vanguard suggests this: To further diversify your stock portfolio, consider allocating 30% to 50% to foreign stocks.

You're going to see everything from 0-50% here also. There really is no benchmark about INT. You pretty much have to pick a number you're comfortable with and will stick with.

All our equity investments are 40% international (taxable, 529s, IRA, etc) rebalanced every 6 months or so.

I drank the vanguard kool-aid early on, and have kept pace with their recommendations. Ideally, this will result in less volatility for a small hit on returns. Only time will tell...
