Dividend Half what its supposed to be?

Post by JC565 » Thu May 31, 2018 2:03 pm

Hey guys,

I bought about $300 worth of GE shares back in january and march. around 150 each time. 22 shares total. I Read that GE dividend was .12 per share. doesnt take very complex math to see that 22 x .12 = $2.64. However, when I look at my transaction history in vanguard, the total dividend i actually got was $1.32. exactly half. Now I am trying to figure out why. I know these arent big numbers or anything but thats still 50% lol.

can anyone explain to me whats going on here? These shares were bought through vanguard, and as far as I know dont have a fee for re-investing the dividends.

The last record date for dividends was 2/26/18 so you didn't get dividends for the shares you purchased in March, only the ones you bought in January. Next time you will get dividends for all your shares.

It is likely you bought your second lot (11 shares) after the X-Dividend date. You will get the full 22 x .12 next payment date. Just guessing. Go look at your buy dates and the X-Dividend date.

If you believe in the efficient market hypothesis, there should be no way you can get screwed over by buying and selling near the eligibility dates for dividends, as the market adjusts the price of the stock to match the value of future cashflows.

One less thing to worry about!
Be greedy and fearful. All the time.

Contrarian investing perhaps? Given that the OP only bought 22 shares, it's likely a "play money" move.
