6 month T-bill from Vanguard

Post by raveon » Fri May 25, 2018 1:55 pm

How do you buy a 6month T-bill at Vanguard? I have 5000 to invest. I checked and everything shows up as min qty of 1000 which equates to 1000x1000 = 1M. Thanks.

Not sure but I think the minimum quantity is in dollars; one T-Bill.

I was looking at the secondary market. I switched to the 'Auctions' tab and was able to put in an order for 5 (i.e., 5000) with a settlement date of 5/31/2018. The CUSIP number is 912796QL6. I guess I'll find out in a week what rate I will get. Trying something new today...

I have an order in at Fidelity for the same. The expected yield listed 2.090 as the rate. I think rates have come down a little the last few days. I'm expecting closer to a flat 2.00 . Auction is set for Tuesday 5/29 .

Is that non-competitive bidding? As in you get the decided rate, right? How much does the actual rate differ from expected?
Thanks.

I think its non-competitive. Yes I get the rate that is published on the auction results.

Thanks. Do you know if you can sell a T-bill bought in auction in secondary market - would there be a penality other than market driven pricing?

Yes you can sell on the secondary market, if you T bill is held at a brokerage (not with Treasury Direct)
