Wisconsin 529

Post by cliff » Tue May 15, 2018 7:13 pm

New Grandchild and wish to start a 529. Would do so in my daughter's name as she is a resident and I am not. This would allow her to take advantage of the Wisc. tax deduction.

In looking at the Edvet options, leaning toward Index based aggressive, in which case I or daughter would need to move toward more conservative as college gets closer. Or aggressive age based.

Appreciate any input...thanks!

We use age-based aggressive for each of our 3 kids and my wife and I each.

There is not much difference between the Age-Based and Aggressive Age-based, but I would lean towards the Age-Based, especially after age 15 or so (because I am on the conservative side).

The fees for the Index-Based funds are less than Age-Based, so if you don't mind handling the glide path yourself, you would save a bit there. Plus the portfolio is less complex, with only TIAA-CREF funds.

All the portfolios are more complex than they need to be and the fees are higher than many other states. But since the daughter gets a tax break through the Wisconsin plan, it's probably worth it.
