Required Minimum Distributions

Post by gassert »

My understanding from IRS pub 590 is that when a spouse is greater than 10 years in age from the IRA account holder, then the RMD is calculated using the actual joint life expectancy in table II (or I guess uniform table III can be used, but it's less favorable).

I was also under the impression, that in order to use the calculated method that the spouse must be the sole primary beneficiary, otherwise the uniform table must be used. Is that indeed the case? Or if spouse was 10% and kids were 90%, can you also "benefit" by using the calculated method?

Thanks!
