Vanguard: exchange or buy/sell?

Post by brother7 »

Current Portfolio
Fund A: 3000 (investor shares)
Fund B: 3000 (investor shares)
Cash: 4000

Desired Portfolio
Fund C: 10000 (admiral shares only, no investor shares)

Questions:
  1. Is there a way to exchange Fund A + Fund B + Cash for Fund C using online methods only?
  2. Is there a way to exchange Fund A + Fund B + Cash for Fund C using telephone rep?
  3. Is the only way to achieve Desired Portfolio to sell Fund A and Fund B on Day N, then purchase Fund C on Day N+1, thereby being out of the market for 1 day?
EDIT: Clarification added, Fund C has no investor shares. This is a simplified case study but is applicable to US Multifactor Fund (VFMFX) which only has Admiral Shares (50,000 minimum)

1. Yes. All assets must be in same account.
2. Yes.
3. No.

Thanks for the reply mhalley and livesoft. I edited the original post to indicate that Fund C has no investor shares, so the initial purchase has to be 10,000 minimum.

Why don't you try it online right now? You can always Cancel before you Confirm.

Because I haven't yet reached the combined balance in Fund A + Fund B + Cash necessary to exchange for Fund C yet. I anticipate doing this next month.

When I get to "where's the money coming from?" I don't seem to be able to select a combination of currently-owned funds AND either the settlement fund or a bank account. So it seems to me that OP can't do Fund A/B AND cash. I seem to remember from a prior post long ago that a phone call is required for this, but that could be hearsay.

Thanks for trying. It worked for me with Fund A, B, and settlement MM in the same account. Or maybe I had a different MM fund?

If cash was in a separate bank account, then they would not all be in the same account.

OP, maybe you could use the cash to buy Fund A, B, or D-Z, then exchange all three for C the next day?
