Help choosing Emerging Market Funds/ETFs

Post by Mmaarrkkiivv » Thu Feb 08, 2018 4:29 pm

Hi All,

With the market crash this week, I am looking at investing my 100k cash (taxable) if not all at least some of it in emerging markets..

I would appreciate if you could list a few Vanguard funds on emerging markets as I am completely new to this world.

Thanks in advance.

I caution you against an "all" mentality. Long term a diversified portfolio is the way to go IMHO. Do not try to time markets like EM Intl or US. Pick an AA you like and stick with it.

Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock Index Fund Admiral Shares (VEMAX) for $10,000 or more
Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock Index Fund Investor Shares (VEIEX) for less than$10,000

Both are low cost broad based index funds

I wanted an EM tilt so I chose to start my Roth conversions into EM for now. I chose IEMG (iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF). It isn't Vanguard, but I liked it better.

What is the best (cheapest, deepest, most liquid, most tax efficient) EM ETF available? This is for a taxable account.

IEMG complements IEFA well since S Korea is included in IEMG and not in IEFA. Additional note: IEFA does not include Canada.

On the other hand, VWO complements VEA. VWO does not include S Korea; S Korea and Canada are included in VEA.

Finally, if you own IEMG with VEA, then you are overweight in S Korea.

I use SCHE and VWO. Some notes:

SCHE: a little more tax efficient in taxable account, a little cheaper than VWO, distributes dividends yearly

VWO: more liquid, smaller bid/ask spread, distributes dividends quarterly

SCHE, VEIEX or VWO would be my choice for the following reasons:
1. cheap/low ER
2. lower correlation to US equities and developed market equities thus better diversification
3. probably SCHE if in a taxable account
