ATTENTION: Vanguard 529s? - Better Check Your Balance(s)

Post by darkhorse346 » Sat Dec 30, 2017 7:15 am

Checked Vanguard 529 account balances this morning and it showed there was no money in there! Money was in there yesterday and no transactions have taken place.

Message sent to Vanguard to fix the problem, but won't hear back until next week.

Hopefully, this is just the result of a system update that will be corrected by Vanguard.

Obviously, I'm concerned about something like this happening. Long time Vanguard investor here, but this episode, along with similar stories from other Bogleheads, erodes confidence. :annoyed

Ha! Ha! Better NOT check your balance(s) until you report back that everything is working for you. :)

I checked after reading your post, and can report the same situation ($0 balance for 529s where there shouldn't be).

So I'm inclined to think that it is a temporary IT glitch affecting large numbers of (all?) 529 accounts and will most likely be on somebody's priority fix list in rather short order.

Same situation here, but for me shows the units I have of my investments in the 529, just no price. Maybe that is the issue? Also, when I go to the external 529 website, I see my balance.

Yep, same, I was in panic mode briefly when I compared yesterday's balance to today's!

Didn't recall a 20% market drop! :annoyed

Same here - it happens occasionally, I'll log in and the balance will be everything but the 529 plans. Usually logging out and logging back in fixes it, but not today. Fidelity FullView can't pull the value either.

In all seriousness a few months ago I did check the balances and I was really surprised because one account had a balance had barely grown compared to another despite 2017 doing quite well. My child has 2 accounts (one we started and one was some inheritance we put into at UTMA). After some digging they had the birthday wrong on the UTMA 529 account which changed the age-based allocation. I called and they pulled up the original form I had sent in and they admitted they transcribed the information incorrectly. Turns out since it was their mistake they fixed the birthday and adjusted the account balance as if it was invested correctly from the beginning. It’s always good to check everything.

Vanguard 529 shows zero balance this morning?

Post by PhillyBird » Sat Dec 30, 2017 9:15 am

Thanks to financial aggregator, noticed that my son's Vanguard 529 account shows zero balance this morning, though number of share units is still correct.

Anyone else experienced this?

Could this be some year-end activities by Vanguard or should I be worried? Looked in the transaction history and did not see any suspicious activity.

I have seen other reports of this here in the forums. Probably just a glitch, but unsettling to be sure.

Same here. Our child's 529 plan shows $0 current balance. Balances over time view is still showing correct amount. Vanguard better fix this fast!

Ours too. It's not a good look for Vanguard, but I expect it's a temporary computer glitch.

Vanguard website has a contact number of 800-291-3056 for the 529 plan. Indicates however only Monday through Friday, 8AM-9PM Eastern. With New Years Day on Monday, I doubt the phone will be answered until Tuesday.

I logged into Vanguard's web site.. i see my units count, but they have no value in the main vanguard website. However, when i click "go to my 529 area", i see the values in there.

It is unnerving but I bet you will all be fine.

This happened to our retirement accounts at Voya (scary - they said it was our company moving to a new "platform"). That resolved in 24 hours, happily.
This also happened to my mortgage at Suntrust. That also resolved in 24 hours, sadly.

Same problem here. It's funny to me that this occurred on the one and only day of the year that I update the balance in my spreadsheet.

keystone, I suspect a lot of BHs (myself included) are busy updating their spreadsheet as soon as the calendar year closes from the business/ investments point of view. I am going on faith at this point that Vanguard will fix this (hopefully) IT blunder. So I'll record the proper 529 balance in my spreadsheet as I "close the books" for 2017.

When I am in the "Balances and holdings" screen and I select the tab "Go to my 529 plan account area" I see all three of my 529 accounts, and the correct balances. I see zeros in the 529 plans in the "Balances and holdings" screen.

Vanguard 529 Plans Showing Zero Balance

Post by Cosmo » Sat Dec 30, 2017 11:34 am

Came across something very alarming this morning. Both of my kid's 529 plan show a zero balance on the Account Overview page! When I drill into the account to see transaction details, poof nothing there. No evidence of any account being there. The only evidence of the accounts even existing are from the Account Overview page.

Anyone else experiencing this? According to my account profile, nothing has changed; email, mailing address, bank account number all the same. Of course, they are not open today so I have to wait all the way until Tuesday to find out more details.

Vanguard online 529 balance not showing

Post by Surbo15 » Sat Dec 30, 2017 11:53 am

Good morning, I log on to my accounts, and my 529 plans show a balance of $0.00. And no one answers at Vanguard because of the holiday. Anyone have info or experience this before?

Good morning. I also posted about this issue as well. If you scroll further down, there was already a thread started on this. Apparently it is a widespread problem. Here is the post:

Our 529 plan balances are correct. They are correct on the balances and holdings tabs of my mutual fund type account and are also correct in the 529 plan account area.

Perhaps Vanguard has shut down some of its servers in an effort to save electricity costs over the extended weekend. Gotta keep those costs down!

Bogleheads -

I was curious by this thread so i logged into the College 529 accounts. I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that Vanguard appears to be changing and updating the website. At times, it is a hybrid between he new and old website.

Clicking around I noticed the following: if I was on the "old" website, the accounts are gone. If however, i clicked the account overview page (and a new website) the accounts are present without problems.

This may be contributing to the disappearance.

I merged threads by PhillyBird, Cosmo, and Surbo15 into the on-going discussion. This combined thread is now in the Investing - Theory, News & General forum (broken Vanguard website).

Hey Vanguard! How about some advance notice on doing maintenance on our accounts? The timing is interesting as well. They waited until the weekend so they wouldn't have to handle the phone calls. FWIW, mine still show zero balance.

well yes, balances appear to be restored- that's a relief. However, I see no indication of any acknowledgment on the Vanguard site that there was a problem. While this issue was resolved quickly, it has left me more than a bit concerned. Perhaps the emphasis on ever lowering costs is now becoming counter-productive. ERs measured in hundredths of one percent point are great, but gee whiz, Vanguard needs to ensure the IT staff are up to the task. This has also made me wonder as to the details of the process here (i.e. who is responsible for what between Vanguard, Ascensus College Savings, and the state of Nevada?) Just downloaded the most recent program description from November.

You assume it's maintenance, but it's possible somebody dropped the punch cards on the way to process the nightly batch, and they failed to put them back in proper order.

It's getting even worse and more disturbing. Earlier today, my 529 balances for each of my two kids showed a zero balance. Now when I check, the two 529 plan account names are just gone! No mention of them. It's like they were never there in the first place. Boy, I hope we get some answers from Vanguard early next week.

I've noticed things have been a little slow at Vanguard since about the week before Christmas. Seems like everything is taking a day longer than usual. Money coming in takes a day longer, a few trades I put in took a day longer to not show up as pending any more. Hopefully whatever they are doing over the holidays they finish soon and helps them to run more smoothly next year.

That is interesting. I purchased this week and there was no difference from prior investments.

I'll chime in. Noticed the 529 zero balance problem when I logged in yesterday to look at something else. Sent an email noting the discrepancy and expect they'll get it fixed up soon enough. In fact, logging in this morning, I see that the 529 balance is back.

I noticed that about Fidelity's bug this morning as well. It wasn't the first time. However, the problem was isolated to external accounts that were entered manually, so there was no cause of concerns. I further noticed that both occurrences were in the morning during weekends. So I conjecture that they were doing an update. It is back now.
