Help me recreate VTSAX from these funds

Post by eye.surgeon » Thu Nov 30, 2017 11:47 pm

My 401k doesn't offer VTSAX/Vanguard total stock market, but it does offer these Vanguard funds:

Vanguard 500 index admiral (VFIAX), small cap growth index admiral (VSGAX), small cap index admiral (VSMAX), midcap index admiral (VIMAX).

I've been using VFIAX as one of my funds in my 3 fund portfolio, but I feel like I'm missing out a bit compared to the total stock market index fund. Can someone help me recreate the total stock market fund from these available funds? I realize it likely won't result in much of a performance difference but it would help ease my OCD.

Head over to portfolio visualizer and compare S&P500 to TSM... nearly identical. But the above 80/20 is the way, I just wouldn’t bother. I hold TSM where I can, but consider S&P500 equivalent and also designate it as my tax loss harvest partner.

You don't need the growth fund. You can approximate TSM using 500 index and small cap or 500 index, mid cap and small cap. See this link.

I'm probably use 80/20 500 index/small cap.

I agree S&P 500 and total stock market index funds have had nearly identical performance, but if you want to mimic content of the total stock market index fund use an 82/18 mix of S&P 500 to small-cap funds. I wouldn't bother.

Also absolutely don't over-complicate it by using mid-cap too. The VG Small-cap fund is 50/50 mid/small-cap anyways; about double the median market cap of many small indexes like S&P600/R2K.

Thank-you everyone for the input. I did mix in the small cap fund a bit as suggested, mostly to make myself feel better.
