Dumb, simple question? nonVanguard funds in Vanguard account?

Post by Sunsolar » Tue Oct 03, 2017 1:33 pm

I apologize in advance if this is obvious. If I open a Vanguard account to transfer IRAs, ROTHs and SEPs, do I have the option of investing in non-Vanguard funds as well through my Vanguard accounts? Or am I strictly limited to Vanguard funds? I am most likely going to use the BH three or four fund portfolio, but I wanted to have options available to me.

Yes you can.

vanguard.com discusses this and the FEES associated with doing so.

As vanguard has switched to a brokerage account platform, you can buy stocks, bonds, options, treasuries, CDs, vanguard and non vanguard funds and ETFs. There will be a few funds you can’t buy there, but you should be able to buy just about anything. The question is, why would you? :happy

You should also be aware that a taxable account, a TIRA account, a Roth IRA account, etc. are all separate accounts. You would have to open each of them separately.
