Updated Portfolio Advice Needed (401k / Fidelity) 34

Postby flyersrule » Thu Jul 13, 2017 10:51 am

Just updated my allocations the last few weeks after making a few tweaks based on suggestions here in May. Any further suggestions would be great. I tried getting a little more international exposure recently with FTIPX.

I guess as validation how am I doing thus far?

I am 34 and Max my 401K every year (9+) and also have been doing a backdoor Roth the past 3 years. Own a home with low mortgage rate. Not putting extra in as I might move soon and just rent it. Approx $180-200K comp/yr. Wife works and makes about $100K+ but files seperatly and had own retirement funds.

Have a newborn on the way in November - Been looking into ways to invest here.

Cash
$233K

Fidelity

$211,814 - BSPIX (https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/mutua ... /066923558) - Only index fund avail with low ER
$31,192 - PTTAX - (https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/mutua ... /693390445)
$55,050 - SLMCX - (https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/mutua ... /19766H429) - High ER but strong growth in tech sector over last 6-7 years

UPDATE 7/20

I just shifted SLMCX to PTTAX so I should be close to my 20% Bond goal in my 80/20 portfolio. Now I am wondering if I should increase allocation of International funds.

I see a few places say International should be around 20% of equities. Is that 20% of Total Portfolio or 20% of just equities (16% total of port)

US Equities... 74.27%... $377,938.06
Intl............. 6.09% ...$30,984.83
Bonds......... 19.64% ....$99,925.42

Update 7/20 v2

CRAP....Strike my last post. I just realized I have PTTAX in my 401K not PTTRX. That changes everything as PTTAX has a ER of .086. Doesnt seem like I have any good Bond funds so I need to change my whole strategy now.

Here's your qualified validation: we're missing a lot of information such as expenses, but it seems like you save a lot and are paying attention, so you're doing well.

The biggest issue to me is asset allocation. You're currently at roughly 85% US stock, 6% international stock, 9% bonds. Is that your goal? You previously said 15-25% bonds. You could count the cash as bonds, in which case you're closer to 60/40. And are you going to spend it soon, like for a down payment?

The other question is why do you want such a high ER fund in SLMCX? You are literally handing over hundreds of dollars a year for this, and you already own these stocks. As an illustration, you already have roughly 10k in Apple and Alphabet through your total market funds, and you're paying extra have another ~5k of of those stocks (10% of the fund). I would get rid of SLMCX yesterday. You could move all of that to PIMCO and be closer to 20% bonds. Another option may be all stocks in the 401k and municipal bonds in taxable for your bond allocation. People smarter than me should weigh in, but I'm guessing the PIMCO fund is inexpensive enough that it still makes sense to use that.

What is the benefit of filing separately and considering your retirement accounts in isolation?

Look into 529 for the baby. Many good conversations on this forum as recently as this weekend about the pros and cons. Some states offer tax deductions.

Your employer might offer a dependent care FSA that would let you deduct I think 5k in income for eligible child care. A nanny would qualify under my own plan.

Pttrx is 0.46% ER so might make sense to just load up bonds on my 401k

I know SLMCX has a bad ER ratio but in the last 7 years owning it, the gains have far outweighed the expense. It's near it's all time high so I might cash in and move that to bonds now.

YTD (Daily)*
+24.57%
Average Annual Returns
1 Yr +38.16%
3 Yrs +17.78%
5 Yrs +18.32%

What types of tax exempt mini bonds would you think could be good at Fidelity?

I could always load up my Roth IRA with the FSITX and then the remaining ratio in PTTRX in 401k since FSITX is lower er

I think I might do all BSPIX in my 401k, move my whole IRA to FSITX and redeploy capitol to bonds in my Taxable to even it out to 20%. That means having about 80k of bonds in taxable.

What would be a good one to use from fidelity
