I hit my first $100k today in my 401k!!

It took me 8 years with the last two years maxing out. It feels good being the sole source of income for a family of four and a mortgage. :D

Congratulations MrTrex!

"A mighty oak starts out as an acorn" (not saying that $100k is an acorn)!

everyone on this board who invested/saved a significant amount once looked upon their finances and saw the same thing as you right now. Before you know it, your portfolio will be outperforming your savings.

It's such a slog through the first $100,000. But keep maxing out and you'll see how the next one and the next one comes faster and faster. Congrats!

Hi OP - I've been saving for retirement since my first job out of college, and it took me over 10 years to get to $100K. I agree with the others that the future $100K milestones come faster. I'm now at the point where my money seems to be making money. (I guess this is the effect of compound interest and a rising stock market.) I was just marvelling about this last week, which is why your topic is so timely and relevant for me. Congrats to you!

Good job! I'm almost at my first $100k as well. It helps that doing my own asset allocation has beaten the Vanguard target fund for my retirement age by 1.6% over the past 5 years.

Congrats, it took forever to reach $100,000 milestone but things accelerate after that hopefully you hit the seven figure mark in the next 15 years.

Congrats, keep it going. When I was 40 I was self employed and funds were mighty low with a house, unemployed wife and child. Picked myself up, got some good jobs, saved/invested. Now retired in my midsixties and living in paradise. Net, net keep doing what your doing and before you know it :dollar :moneybag :happy

Congrats! Thanks for posting. I think its important to literally celebrate intermediate milestones on your way to FI. If you started from nothing, like many of us here did, than $100,000 is HUGE! I remember when I had saved $500.00 in bonds when I was in the military, back in the 60s.

Here are other milestones worth celebrating:
1. Paying off a car, (and making a commitment to keeping it for another 5-7 years)
2. kept a commitment to save and invest every year
3. paying off college tuition
4. While I am not a fan of Dave Ramsey, I do like his 3 cheers routine on his radio show when his listeners have paid off their house.
5. Starting a tax deferred 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b) plan.
7. Successfully resisting to spend on that newest gadget because you don't need it.
8. In a market crash, you did NOT panic but rebalanced instead. Takes a lot of courage to rebalance, and worth celebrating.
