Poll: For those 20 yrs away from retirement, what is your current asset allocation and future changes?

Post by lightnoise » Sun Mar 05, 2017 8:56 am

Mine is currently very stock heavy at 95:5. But 5 years from now, I'd like to be at 80:20.

Thanks

I miss polls :( .

When I was 20 years before retirement I was 100% in individual stocks, and that was a big mistake. 60/40 would have been good.

Currently 94/6 at ages 42/39. Moving (slowly) to 60/40 over the next ~20 years, at about 2% per year.

We're 41/36, so probably right about 20 years from retirement (I could probably retire sooner but my wife has 20 years).

We're at 61.5% stocks, 28.5% bonds, 10% Precious Metals. We're adding 1% of bonds each year until we reach 50/40/10 and let that take us towards our retirement date where I hope to use VPW for retirement withdrawals.

mid 40's and with this recent run up have done some rebalancing from 80/20 (Stock/Bonds) to 75/25 across just about all the portfolios. we continue to invest of course, but i'll hold 75/25 till we hit 50 and look to see what market conditions are before taking further action. we've also slightly tilted our new purchases to 70/30 with a mild increase in international (about 25-30% of new purchases).
yes you can do this!

50% cash
35% LT bonds
7% real estate (primary residence)
5% gold
3% oil

It's possible I'm too pessimistic. We plan to use some of the cash to buy or build a nicer house or two. For now, I keep transferring 80% of my paycheck to cash savings (spending the other 20%), for lack of a more attractive opportunity. I suspect my earning potential should be fine as long as stocks are rallying.

I'm 92% stocks and 8% bonds at 30 years old. I am holding mostly "Target Date 2050", and I have some "Total Stock Market" to up my stock holdings a little bit. Eventually, I'll go 100% into the target date fund, but not in the near future.

Im 60S/40B

Can rarely go wrong with that allocation after a 5-7 year bull market. Would be more aggressive, but concerned about inevitable market pullback. 60/40 is my risk tolerance in this market at this time. My risk tolerance may change if things are different in the market. Ideally I'd like to be 70/30, but not comfortable with that in the current market

I am @ 80/20.

Having said that, I do keep an additional 10% of my liquid net worth in cash like investments (Savings account, CDs, iBonds, etc.) that I do not count as part of my portfolio. However, I expect this will fall as a percentage of liquid net worth as my portfolio (hopefully!) continues to grow.

I agree with some of the posters and feel that a 60/40 portfolio would be more comforting to me at these stock market valuations, however I am fighting the urge to market time and sticking to my IPS regardless of the nervousness. :P

75:25.

Would like to be 50:50 at retirement, but that will only happen if I manage to hit "my number", otherwise will be staying where I am.

Will most likely deplete fixed income stuff first, allowing allocation to drift back towards 75:25 during retirement.

But open to modifying the plan if I see that my savings or my expenses end up being much higher or much lower than I'm projecting. 20 years is a long horizon. Hard to predict what is going to happen.

About to turn 40 and I'm 85/15. Looking to get to 75/25 by the time I'm 50 and then 60/40 by retirement at 60.

Turn 37 this year and am 19 years away from retirement. I practice 120-age in stock.

50% Total US Stock
33% Total International Stock
17% US bonds (total or muni depending on account)

Once I get to 50/50 at age 70 I plan to stick with it.

80/20, and following the logarithmic glide path discussed in the wiki until it hits 50/50, then staying there.

Liquid portfolio is 60/20/20 (in stocks & precious metals / bonds / cash). In addition, we have a lot of rental properties so we are real estate heavy; thus we choose to manage the risks in our liquid portfolio. We are in our late 40s.

I'm planning to retire in 19.5 years. We're at 80/20 (will have a pension and that factors into our asset allocation decision). Will gradually shift to more bonds as time passes and maybe be around 65/35 as retirement begins.

Retirement window is 22 years out. My portfolio is mostly 80% stocks/20% bonds and cash. I will probably hold this asset allocation up to about 10 years out, then switch to a 60/40 allocation. 5 years out, 40/60, which I will probably leave as the ending allocation. The 60% at that time will include TIPS as well.

42yo and no plans to retire any time soon. Have 25x my annual spending saved already, which is really cool because it allows me to take more risks with my career and investments. I don't plan on changing this allocation for the next 12-24 months.

Current total AA:
Real estate (investments through private partnerships): 35%
Domestic equity: 31%
International equity: 21%
Fixed income: 9%
Cash/other: 4%

If we are talking only the liquid securities accounts:
Domestic equity: 48%
International equity: 32%
Fixed income: 14%
Cash/other: 6%

20 years prior to retirement I was 100% in stock. I kept on buying every month regardless of market levels. You want the market to be low when you are accumulating stock. I wouldn't change anything if I had it to do over again.

I'm 40 so I'm 20 years out just about exactly. After reading this thread I feel a bit on the conservative side being at 70/30! I will probably go 60/40 at 50 and maybe 50/50 at 60.

30 years away from retirement. 100% stocks. No idea how long I intend to hold onto 100% stocks for, but I would say at least 10 years, maybe 15 before I consider changing my allocation.

For those of us with time left, embrace the 100%.
The best thing that could happen today is the market crashes by 50% and stays low for the next 16 years. You will gain more from periodic contributions buying low than buying high.

I'm 46. I have no idea how far I am from retirement. I plan to work for as long as I'm able hopefully doing only things I'm passionate about. I'm close to all cash mostly because that is what I am comfortable with. I missed out big on the rally since 2009.

39 here, hoping to retire around 60. Currently 100% stock index funds, 26% international. Planning to adjust more conservative but maybe not for another 5-10 years. I've looked our net worth and feel I am prepared for a 50% decline, on paper, in our invested assets. Reasonably confident our emergency fund will see us through any rough patches.

27/m. I'll be 90% equities until my financial capital is more than my human capital (essentially until my assets are halfway to my target number).

At 46/47 I (hope) I am not 20 years from retirement. That number seems to get fuzzier the older I get.

We are 60/40. I plan to go to "Age in Bonds" on my birthday this year. Holding steady at 50/50.

Age 33. Hopefully can retire within 20 years. I'm at 90/10, the most aggressive Vanguard Target Retirement Fund that I could find.

Accumulation phase: 80/20.

I have floor ("needs") FI number and ceiling ("wants") FI number.
Once hit floor FI number: move to 65/35
One hit ceiling FI number: 50/50

Simple.

70/30. Plan to get to 65/35 gradually by age 45 and then leave it there.

Age 40.

Recently switched to 60/40 (equities/fixed income) and plan to do "age in fixed income" moving forward.

Age: Mid-30s

All accounts: 61%/29%/10% (Stock/Bond/Cash)
Investment accounts (ex-cash): 68%/32% (Stock/Bond)
Retirement accounts (ex-cash/ex-taxable): 82%/18% (Stock/Bond)

Cash accounts are checking and savings and hold one month expenses buffer plus emergency fund. The taxable account contains exclusively tax exempt bond funds and accumulating for house down payment.

So for retirement I'd say my AA is 82/18. I plan to increase bond allocation 1%/year.
