Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting - Anyone Going?

Post by MorningstarFan » Tue Feb 28, 2017 6:28 pm

Hi all,

Just wondering if any one of you is planning to attend Berkshire Hathaway's Annual Meeting.

Also, if you own a mutual fund that invests in BRK.A and BRK.B, will I be eligible to attend the annual meeting? I own the Sequoia Fund (SEQUX) and the top holdings are class A and class B stocks in Berkshire.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! :happy

Not clear to me that owning through a mutual fund gets you a credential. I'd say probably not.

I am pretty sure you have to own it Berkshire Hathaway directly. Think about it, if you own Vanguard Total Stock Market you aren't a direct shareholder of Apple which I think is the top holding. I used to go to the Berkshire meeting. I'd recommend going at least once for the experience. However, Yahoo finance is broadcasting the meeting again this year. So you can watch in your pjs the morning of May 6th if you want.

As posted in the link above by Boglegrappler, Yahoo is streaming it live again, so we can all be there in the comfort of our own home.

As an investor would my trip to Annual Meeting be tax deductible? If not, why not.

I can confirm that simply owning a mutual fund that is invested in BRK.A or BRK.B is not enough to get you a credential.

Not to worry though, Berkshire Hathaway sells them directly on ebay for $5 if you’re not a shareholder.

I recently wrote a blog post about attending the shareholder meeting on my blog. It might be useful to other Bogleheads.

Although eligible, I am not going as I don't like big crowds/conventions.

For a mere $175 you child buy one share of BRK-b and go.

I also still own Sequx, even despite their Valieant episode. It's about 10% of my portfolio.

What are your thoughts about Sequx long term --- Are you planning to stay invested with them?

I recently purchased BRKB on 2-22-2017 hoping to be eligible to attend the meeting, I haven't found a record date or any info indicating if I qualify, anyone know what the cut off date is?

Anybody watching the annual meeting on Yahoo Finance? I have it on in the background to listen to while I'm doing other things.

FYI, Jack Bogle, who was in attendance at the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting this year, received a huge shout out from Warren Buffet at the start of the meeting for having created enormous wealth for investors as a result of introducing the index fund and low cost investing. He also wished him a happy 88th birthday (this coming Monday). In an interview on Yahoo Finance during the lunch intermission Jack Bogle was obviously very touched by Warren's gesture.

I am reviving this thread to hopefully see if anybody around here is going this year.

I'm going and would be glad to hang out with some Bogleheads who are in attendance.

I'll be traveling with one of my friends whose investment philosophy is much more similar to a day trader than a boglehead. You may be able to convert him :)
