500K milestone celebration

Post by Streptococcus » Thu Jan 05, 2017 9:19 am

I know it's not a big deal to many of you guys but we became bogleheads in April 2013 and our first goal was to exceed the 500K milestone before the end of 2016: Check! A little more than 3.5 years.
Thank you so much for all your inspiration, advices and guidance. Next milestone, seven figure before 2020.

Congratulations!! These goals are very meaningful to the success of our retirement plans and provide a great psychological bonus to our "hands-off" investing methodology. Great job!

Portfolio. But networth is about the same as the equity on our house equals the debt and we have no other debt.

We are at $450k, so almost at the milestone (net worth is $700k) at age 37. But in the back of my mind I know that this will decrease a lot when the market drops next. So remember $500k can become $250k next year but can't be discouraged and must stay the course.

Strep! You're a Half-a-Millionaire!
Remember the most famous half-a-millionaire, Horace Vandergelder, in Hello Dolly? He had quite a bit of excitement trying to fend off the girls, although it appears you're already hitched :D

Sullivan, ticket seller: Where to, Dolly?
Dolly Levi: Yonkers, New York, to handle a highly personal matter for Mr. Horace Vandergelder, the well-known, unmarried, half-a-millionaire.
Sullivan, ticket seller: Gonna marry him yourself, Dolly?
Dolly Levi: Why, Mr. Sullivan, what ever put such a preposterous idea into my head... er, your head!

congrats! We are just a few bucks short, but basically at this milestone. I can't pinpoint a starting point, but when we got married ~18 months ago and I started getting serious about A Portfolio, I had maybe $90k? and spouse had $40k.

Our gains came from spouse's job .... we plan to live and save on my income, but spouse landed a good job and has kept it for 2 years.

I was always the live-within-means, save slowly person; spouse lived within means, but was ok with going down to zero in between jobs (I'm not). I think spouse has gotten really awakened by the monthly reports, when I say "so we have $X now" and especially this month, when I could say "we have $X now, and we had $X-150 last year". We're both happy with what we've done in the last year (and without squeezing to do it, we are very lucky), and we both know that we'll have times where spouse is not employed, and times (soon I'd suspect) when gains are negative.

Congrats to you!!! I keep an excel sheet that I update every 6 months and happened to be looking at it last night. I started BH's in 2011 and our retirement accounts totaled $75K. Today we are almost at $440K. This site is a gem.

I too reached 500K on Dec 10, 2016! Sum of my deferred comp plan, Vanguard Roth IRA, Vanguard taxable account, checking and savings.
Next goal 500K without including the checking and savings. Joined Vanguard Oct 2007 and this site Feb 2010.

Renn, "Managing" your funds frequently is the path that will stunt your growth (financially). It is better to have a plan and stick to it. Your choice of funds and Asset Allocation is also important.

If you think you should be doing better, post your data in this format:
viewtopic.php?t=6212
in a new thread and ask for some feedback from a fresh set of eyes. We often don't even know that we should be asking certain questions. If you have specific questions, great! If you don't, just ask how your investing might be improved. (Just putting the requested information together in the recommended format will likely raise questions in your mind.)

Strep, congrats on an awesome job!

Huh, 50k grew to 500k without investing extra money in the meantime?! I understood that 7% average return is to be expected with passive indexinvestements (sorry if this is a stupid question, I am new here  ).

Nevertheless, well done! Congrats

I'll be a Debbie Downer!

I'm guessing the bulk of the gains came from saving not investing. What if the OP makes 450K per year? Then going from 50K to 500K in 3 years is not that impressive. I would be impressed by your career choice though and say nice work but it wouldn't have anything to do with this forum. What is there was a 100K inheritance during this time? Sometimes people forget to mention these details. I see posters do humble brags like, "how am I doing as a 27 yo with 200K networth 4 years out of college?" They often neglect to initially mention that their parents paid for all 200K of their college loans so they started out with zero debt.

I need context and more information before I'm gushing over this achievement. What say you OP? What was your saving rate relative to your income during this time, what were your market returns, and did you have any assistance? I will gladly give credit where credit is due when appropriate. Otherwise it feels like I'm saying good job to someone who received a participation ribbon.

Please do not take this post too seriously. :)
