buy more shares of vtsax now or wait?

Post by boglechu » Thu Feb 25, 2016 9:55 pm

I recently got into the stock market game. 35 years old.

Most currently:

VGHCX (healthcare sector): $5700 / -1.3%
VDIGX (dividend growth): $8000 / +3.5%
VTSMX (total stock): $8000 / +3.0%
VWINX (wellesley income fund; conservative allocation): $10000 / +2.3%
VGTSX (total international stock): $4000 / -1.7%

Total of investments $35,700. I have another $15000 that I can invest.

Shorterm Plan:
1. Sell VGHCX when I'm even.
2. Possibly sell VGTSX since I have feeling US market more stable
3. Should I buy more VTSMX now (tomorrow) with my remaining $15000 or wait?

Longterm plan for next 5 years:
1. Keep 60% VTSAX, 20% VDIGX, 20% VWINX. VWINX will be in place of bonds.

Pick your asset allocation. Stick with your asset allocation.

I always buy as soon as the money is available. Time in the market > Timing the market.

I also agree with the above post. Pick a plan and stick with it. Less fiddling around, more investing stoicism.

Stay! The! Course!

There's investing, and then there's trading. If one is investing, the most prudent path is to set an asset allocation, contribute regularly, and come back periodically.

Trading is a different animal. If you really, truly, want to trade, then set up a trading account. Trading can be fun, and give vent to your animal spirits. Dedicate 5% of your investable assets to your trading account, and flail away. You might (or might not) make money, and (unlike a casino) you won't get free drinks, but it's amusing. Hint: always trade in an IRA. You really, truly, don't want to account for all the "ins and outs".

Before I retired, I set up a SEP-IRA with Schwab as a dedicated trading account. When I get the itch to trade, I have the vehicle. As I itch that scratch, I leave my retirement funds alone.

Don't play with your future.

Is this in a taxable account?
If so, dump it now and enjoy the benefits of the loss (TLH).
If not, dump it now anyway, the loss is small... 1.3% isn't much of < $6,000.

These stocks are all in VTSMX already, this is unnecessary overlap... sell it and put the money in VTSMX, then convert to VTSAX (admiral shares).

Sounds like you know this already, but this is not a bond fund... I would consider swapping this for a total bond fund and reducing it to match your desired total asset allocation... which is what by the way?

A "feeling"?
I'm ok with calling this all a game... just a choice of verbiage really... but making decisions based on feelings is a disaster in the making!
Don't do it.
Markets are not "stable", learn to deal with this fact. This is why you should hold bonds.
I would recommend that you hold on to your international as it is for now and do lots of reading around here before making a move (tons of threads on this topic).

Yes.
No time like the present!

Just my 2c.
Good luck!

You need to take emotions and gambling out of investing.
