That pie chart seems to be a list of funds and not an asset allocation. Several of the sectors even overlap.

It is a detailed AA. Please explain your comments, as they seem to make no sense.

Would you agree that your "US Total Market" also includes some "US Small/Mid"? The latter overlaps the former.
Would you agree that your "Intl. Small" also includes some small-cap emerging markets? Does your "Emerging Mkt" also include small-cap emerging markets?
For that matter does your "Intl. Developed" also include mid and small cap international developed?

I suppose I do the same thing as the OP, but for all practical purposes it seems to be the most reasonable way of specifying an asset allocation. Sure, there is overlap between a total market fund and a small fund, but does it really matter much?

- Did I make the 2% or so adjustment to US Total market to US Small/Mid? No. I did not think the 0.5% shift was worth the complexity in my spreadsheet.
- I have broken out the Emerging Markets portions from the Intl Small and Emerging Markets Small. So the # for Emerging Markets is 100% accurate, but includes small caps that are not reflected in the Intl Small number. I do calculate total % of Intl. Small as a % of portfolio (13.4%). Of course you have to make a choice in which chart to show, and i believe that the EM vs DM Intl. is a more important view - but there is a rebalance band around Intl. Small as a % of portfolio.
- Intl Developed is EAFE - so whatever that includes.

So if your point is that the AA posted does not have the level of granularity of a morningstar style box & regional allocation chart, then you are correct. That is also irrelevant minutia - of no consequence or benefit beyond my approach to any decision I would make.

EDIT: After thinking about it, I decided to improve the chart. Now it has large/small buckets for each of US, Intl, and EM. This is consistent.

47.5 Equity (Portfolio of 24 Large Cap Stocks such as XOM, CVX, JNJ, PG, KO, MO to name a few).

52.5 Fixed Income in two bond funds (USAA Income Fund and USAA High Yield Bond Fund)

I have been a Dividend Growth Investor but am seriously looking at transitioning to a 3 Fund VG portfolio to simply things as I get older. Would seek to maintain a 50/50 asset allocation.

Here is my portfolio, but as other posters have mentioned, I do not recommend that you match it. If my portfolio is right for you, then you know enough to ignore this advice.

Note that I count my mortgage as a negative bond; stock is less than 100% of the dollar balance of my investments, but 100% of the net value, so I consider my allocation to be 100% stock.

Age 46

0% net bonds:
-15% mortgage (not a target, just what the mortgage happens to be right now)
15% bond fund

100% stocks:
45% US, split 1/3/1/3 LG/LV/SG/SV
45% foreign, split 3/2/2/1 developed large/emerging large/developed small/emerging small (would split evenly if costs were closer to equal)
10% REITS, equally split between US and foreign

Target AA = 45% equities, 53% bonds, 2% real estate.
Currently 46% equities, 52% bonds, 2% real estate.

While I was well within my 5% bands, I rebalanced about 2% out of equities via gifting to 529 plans early this year.
