Donating appreciated securities

Post by Murray Boyd » Mon Dec 03, 2012 1:40 pm

I just read the wiki entry on donating appreciated securities. How long is the usual turnaround time for that? Is it already too late this year to do it?

The "turnaround" will depend on you and your broker. We can walk into our broker's office on the last trading day of the year before the market closes and hand them a signed form to donate shares and the deed is done. We could send a scan of the form via fax or e-mail, too.

Call up and ask your broker where these shares are held what their procedure is. Call up the charity and ask them how to donate shares to them, too.

It is not too late in the year to do this. I'm sure your donation will be appreciated.

another option, depending on the amount, is to set up a charitable gift account, donate the shares and then (at your leisure) make donations charities.
I always wanted to be a procrastinator.

And the charity may be the main cause of turnaround delays (particularly if it is a small charity or one which receives almost entirely cash donations), so it's best not to leave this to the last minute.
