We are very lucky living in the US. We do not have a dictatorship which usually loses in wars, like in Nazi Germany. In Germany after 1945 all savings accounts were reduced to 10%, and the country and economy destroyed. This will never happen here.

We always buy new and then drive the cars for 11 to 12 years / 110,000 miles. When repairs get too much, at around 110,000 miles, then we sell and buy new. This works for us.

The buyer used the same bank as we do. We went both to the bank, and buyer deposited the sales amount directly from her account into our checking account. Bank gave me a printout of my account with sales money showing in there.

We did that, our son set up a 529 for our only grandchild in NY state using Vanguard index funds, and we sent moneys directly into that 529 during last 2 years. That 529 has enough money for 5 years in a NY state college. In case we would ever need Medicaid, that 529 is secure.

I once was German, but for the last 32 years am a US citizen. I invest where I get my income (SS, pension) from and where I live, which is from and in the US. This way I have no currency risk in our retirement.

We travel 5 hours by car to reach an Atlantic beach, and do not consider that travel. 10 hours by car or flying would be considered 'Travel'. We like a week to 10 days on Cape Cod, is a great vacation.

We have a corded blower / vacuum, which I use as a vacuum for leaves. But getting towards 80, a battery powered blower seems to be needed for fast effortless cleaning of walk ways, patios and drive way, eliminating using brooms. Thanks mentioning it!

I never received a legitimate unsolicited call from the IRS, though got a letter that I forgot to write all required heading information on sheets of the returns, and that would cost $xx, and I paid them via credit card.

I am sorry that we will never be able to enjoy such conversations, we are over 70, because we only pick up phones when we know the caller. Such cold callers also leave no messages, except once a fake IRS guy told us that we are in trouble, and we enjoyed listening to that recording many times.

We never went to Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, have the SS cards securely stashed away. We were never asked to show the SS card, as far as I remember. But what you need to know is the SS number.

I always wore my wedding band at work and during job interviews, and whenever I am outside the house except during yardwork. MY wife told me not to wear it ever outside when I do yard work (she checks me), because I could lose it and never find it again.

We never provide our SS number when asked. We are on Medicare, but never use the Medicare number, only the insurance ID number on our insurance card from a Medicare Advantage policy.
