Hi nedsaid -nedsaid wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 5:11 pm My understanding is that VPAS isn't the place to go if you want a portfolio customized just for you. In fact, many investment Advisors use portfolio models so even a local Advisor will likely get you into a cookie-cutter portfolio. From what I have read, Vanguard will allow for a bit of client input but they mostly follow a model, in fact they are a robo-advisor and human advisor hybrid service.
That is my understanding as well.
I have a family member who engaged Vanguard PAS a couple of years ago and is very satisfied. Essentially the portfolio is the Vanguard Four Fund Portfolio of US and International Stocks and US and International Bonds.
It works.

Re: Vanguard Advisor Services
Thanks. Vanguard manages my rollover IRA. The mix is 60/40 and I am invested in 9 separate funds. Four Vanguard Advice Select Funds; VADGX, VAGVX, VAIGX & VHCAX. Other funds include: VZICX VXUS VTI Two Bond Funds BVDX BND The recommended fund mix seem to be more complex than needed. While the expense ratio's are low they are higher than an ETF. Furthermore, the complexity has not delivered stronger results and in some cases not even keeping pace with the ETF benchmark. While I love Vanguard products I am not convinced the advice I am getting is worth the cost. Furthermore, the extra complexity is not delivering above par results. I am thinking taking back control and investing in a 5 fund strategy using a 60/40 mix. Hi brad1278 - Vangu...

I have been using the Vanguard Personal Advisor services for the last 18 months and frankly I am not seeing the value. Sure the service is relatively cheap at 30bps, but I still do not see the value. I speak to an advisor 4 times a year. The account has been re-balanced once in 18 months. It looks like a cookie cutter approach, certainly not tailored to me. Probably could have added something about "economic moats", something else he talks about a lot. He and Munger would also prefer to focus their portfolio on a few high quality positions they believe in, instead of having broad diversification (concentrated portfolio). But yes agreed, incredibly hard. He acknowledges this, and encourages the average "know nothing" investor (I put myself in that category) to invest in index funds. The fact that this is his advice (for the average saver/investor to buy index funds) is quite telling too I think. He could just as easily tell us to buy a cross section of high dividend paying stocks, and hold those forever. The fact that he recommends index funds over a portfolio of dividend s...

Re: Berkshire Hathaway and Dividends
Buffett talks a whole lot less about dividends then he talks about what he calls "owner earnings". He talks about how he prefers to own a controlling interest in a business so that he can control capital allocation, but in either case whether he owns a minority position or 100% of the company it is this "owner earnings" calculation he is focused on. Dividends are just a portion of those owner earnings that are being return to him as a shareholder rather than reinvested in the business. Buying back stock is another way of returning owner earnings, and he has written extensively on this, when it makes sense and when it doesn't. When he is a minority owner and doesn't control capital allocation, he is focused like a laser ...

Think about that for a moment.
I recently watched a Warren Buffett interview where he discussed this. In terms of Berkshire paying a dividend, he said they have not (believe they did one year only way back) but that could change in the future.
At some point the growing mountain of cash will be under pressure to put to work or pay back to shareholders if it is not already.

Key points: Cash has low expected returns in the long run due to not carrying any risk premium. And even in a high interest rate environment, stocks/bonds have superior long term expected returns.
My conclusion: Stick to your stock/bond allocation. Don't try to tactically change to cash even in the short term unless you actually need to spend that cash soon or as an emergency fund!

I see better Sharpe and Sorinto ratios on SP 500. If anyone knows a LOT about smaller cap stocks it's Warren, who made many investments outside the SP 500, esp in his earlier days. Let me add another 'I BELIEVE' here -- I think his point is that passive investing's goal is really to track the growth of the economy etc, and its better to keep it simple and use the SP 500 for that purpose. How many countless posts on BH's --that go beyond that simple concept -- convince an otherwise passive investor there is still juice left to squeeze by further (random?) optimizations? Interesting timing. I recently watched a Grant Cardone interview where he discussed investing. He stated that about 500 companies (essentially the S&P 500) are the only stocks of value on the exchanges. He also said the other 3,500 stocks are pure garbage.

Appears Fundrise’s Flagship Interval Fund has eliminated the quarterly dividend.
Fundrise does operate the rental business with very low leverage. Last I heard on their Onwards podcast, it was in the 40% range.
Not sure when the cash flows front he rental income will be paid as dividends again.
Best.

I reviewed the “Browse Invetments” page.
The Flagship Real Estate Fund has not paid a dividend under the trailing history. The yield previously stated 0.40% (which is almost unheard of for a REIT fund to begin with) is now removed.
Please review and let me know if I am missing something.
Thanks!

It looks like prices are down significantly right now. I live in the Midwest so I don’t have a good handle on the market. Is now a good buying opportunity? Are prices in the suburbs down as well?
For example, I could buy an apartment now and rent it out. Then in 5-10 years when I go to part time use it as a vacation home. And when I retire in 15 years move there. Of course, alternatively I could just put the money in VTI and buy a place when I retire.
Better invest in that Fundrise “West Coast e-REIT fund”!
Hope you are well.

This, I BELIEVE, is why Warren Buffet suggested the S&P 500 for passive investing. The volatility costs of the stocks beyond the top 500 aren't worth it in his mind. He seems to be a pretty good investor
Funny! I just wrote this as well and then read your post. We are thinking alike.
Sometimes I wonder about Total Stock and if the approximately 4,000 companies is a little smoke and mirrors in terms of diversification. I have thought this about Total International as well and the 8,000 companies that fund includes. I am relying on investment experts.
How many actually move the needle or make a difference?

Re: Jack Bogle - Two Fund Portfolio
Warren Buffet does seem to really stand by the 10% short-term bonds (cash) figure. He followed up by saying, explicitly, that holding 20, 30, or 40% bonds is "silly". I believe what Buffet is leaving to his wife is 90% S&P 500 and 10% short term Treasuries? In any event her 10% short term bonds will probably amount to 100's of millions - so no risk to her with that nest egg. I know he is a believer in the US stock market but don't know that he sees only 10% in bonds for normal investors. If he does -- ignore it unless you are very young and very risk tolerant. exactly this. It's not to me or you this advice was for. Bogleheads - In my opinion, too much concern and debate is placed into the exact allocation percentages of 90% ...

Re: VNQ at the same level as in 2014! what’s the point of REITS ?
...There's less efficiency in RE markets then again they tend to be more long term commitments so a momentum factor has to last to make a real difference. That’s precisely why there is advantage to seeking recourse to a professional. Because equity markets are pretty efficient, stock-picking is a lousy game, especially after we consider fees and tax-inefficiency. Hence, the whole premise of BH. But the less efficient the market, the more emphasis on being a smart/informed/lucky picker. Wouldn’t it be great, if there were an actively-managed “SFH mutual fund”? I’d happily pay Blackrock of whomever 1.5%/year in fees to get into an actively managed portfolio of single family houses. Does such a thing exist? Am I simply uninformed? Genuinely a...
