Roth Conversion: IRA or 401K?

I have a 401 K and Roth 401K at Vanguard. I also have a tIRA and Roth IRA at Schwab. I plan on converting a sizable amount this year. Are there any pros or cons to converting from 401K to Roth 401K vs converting tIRA to Roth IRA?

Re: Law firm wants 40% PLUS expenses

I have to promise to give the firm 40% of all monies recovered PLUS all of the law firm's expenses. Question: Is having to pay for the law firm's expenses a common feature of these suits? I thought it was usually all taken entirely on a contingency basis. Do you have to pay out of pocket for expenses incurred (somewhat uncommon in personal injury cases, though not my area of experience), or does the law firm pay for all expenses, and its reimbursement of the expenses is contingent on a favorable result? For example, forget for a moment that this is a multi district litigation with numerous plaintiffs and pretend it is just you. The law firm incurs $10 of expenses in prosecuting the case. Do you have to reimburse the firm $10 even if you lo...

Re: Is class action settlement taxable income?

I think it depends on the nature of the claim. For example, if you owned stock that was the subject of a class action settlement due to alleged misrepresentations, and you still own the stock, I suspect the settlement proceeds lowered your basis in the stock and might not be taxable in the year you received the settlement funds. Or, in the unlikely event you received a class action settlement due to alleged personal injuries, it seems likely to me that the funds would also not be taxable.

I agree with everything ChicagoBear7 wrote, and in particular, BMO Harris generally does NOT seem to have competitive deposit interest rates. I think you are best served by looking at this website and do some comparison shopping based on how long you want to park the money, and any issues with early penalty fees:

Thus employees of a company or its advisers can insider trade. I do not know what makes you believe this statement. I think he means "can" as in "able to", versus "can" as in "allowed to". If you aren't associated with a company, you can't ever commit insider trading wrt the company. Because you are not an insider. Your interpretation of what he meant might be correct, and might explain the statement. But this statement is not accurate: "If you aren't associated with a company, you can't ever commit insider trading wrt the company. Because you are not an insider." though I suppose it depends on what you mean by "associated with a company" Tippers and tippees are often "not as...

One big question comes to mind for which I do not have the answer - Is this settlement amount considered taxable income and can anyone cite an IRS publication reference :?: This is a very complicated question and the answer depends on details that the OP should not be sharing in a public forum like this one. There is some IRS guidance here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4345.pdf If the proceeds of the settlement are taxable, there is also the related question of whether the attorney´s fees are deductible. Tax Cut and Jobs Act (TCJA) 2017 got rid of many deductions for personal attorney'fees but there are some exceptions. I'd consider something that hardly ever gets considered here: talk to a really smart stockbroker. You might be able to protect your downside risk of the equity with options/collars (I am not sure if that is the right terminology, even) so that you can sell portions of the equity in multiple year increments and reduce the overall tax burden while protecting the downside of the equity you continue to hold---at a cost for the option.

I would purchase a condo again, if I found the right one in the right location. I would NEVER purchase one in a building with a small number of units. My condo association was one building with 8 units. All we did was fight about how to run the association. After I purchased, I found that it was very loosely run with no real financial planning. Slightly off topic, but I am wondering if one wants to incorporate a small part-time online business (< $5K per year) as a sole proprietor, does it have to be in one's state of residence or can it be in any state (so one could pick a state with low registration and annual fees). With kids at those ages, I think the bleachers would be a fine spot to see a ball game. Whether you want to shield them from such debauchery or not is your parental call. Each of my kids grew up quite a bit in the Wrigley bleachers, and when they come back to Chicago to visit, they love to spend the afternoon together as a family in the bleachers. Because some people, like you suggested earlier, simply (in my view, wrongly) ignore Class Action Notices and fail to complete the claim forms. Others take the time and fill out the paperwork. So, I suspect you, and the class action lawyers, cannot guess what percent fill out the paperwork and what percent ignore it. Your share of the class action proceeds, less court approved expenses and fees--yet another variable, is almost always dependent upon the numbers who participate; a number that varies greatly from case to case.

It seems to me that what you report on your 1040 is a defensible answer to the question, no matter the sources of "income." Including Roth conversions (which are part of AGI)? In what way is that not income? The IRS definitely considers Roth conversions as income. The reason I questioned it is, Roth conversions really are not income in the sense that you did not receive any additional money. Roth conversions just move money from one account to another. They do not increase your ability to pay, which is presumably what the lender would be interested in. Someone above suggested not including it as income on the credit card application.
