Possibly. In the case of a Roth conversion that stays below the standard deduction limit, it is also possible that no portion goes to the IRS.

That link discusses the issues with auto-liquidation of MMFs that are not designated as the settlement fund. It's not that complicated when leaving cash in the settlement fund. Check writing is designed to debit from the settlement fund (it's not a "courtesy"). In a regular Fidelity account, the default settlement fund is earning close to 5%

Yes, most of their accounts offer check writing:illumination wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 3:23 pm So does Fidelity let you just write checks against whatever balance you have in your money market mutual fund? When I went to their website, it seems they separate accounts that have check writing abilities:

The step transaction application seems like a stretch to me. There are legitimate reasons to contribute to your oldest's 529 plan including the potential for graduate school. How would their logic apply to someone who is less certain about whether they may need to change beneficiaries among their children, but ultimately does so anyway? You could always reach out to Maryland and ask. taxhelp@marylandtaxes.gov The step transaction is dependent on intent. That is true in Maryland, beneficiaries do not have to be dependents in order for the account owner to receive the deduction. You just have to be the account owner (or spouse), and have actually made the contribution (funds weren't contributed by another relative, for example).

I don't know where you are looking on the website. The program description gives a different explanation for static investment options like 80/20
Daily cash flows keep the Target Enrollment Date and Static investment options close to target allocations. The Target Enrollment Date and Static investment options will be rebalanced quarterly. Customized investment options with more than one underlying investment will be rebalanced annually on the beneficiary’s birthday (or next business day).

FYI, I had an HSA investment account at TD Ameritrade that was moved to Schwab over the long weekend. I logged in to check that everything went OK. The total balance was correct, but whereas at TD Ameritrade the entire amount was invested in the Fidelity 500 Index Fund, at Schwab, 40% went to Schwab Total Stock Market Index and the rest was sitting in cash. I have no idea why this happened, and I was able to easily place an order to invest the cash. But definitely worth checking to make sure the transition went as you expected. How did you end up invested in a Fidelity index fund at TDA? My mistake. Looking back I was in fact invested in the same Schwab total stock market index while at TD. Re: Leave TSP g fund ?
For the G versus F, you can separate the decision into two parts. You prefer a money-market fund to the G fund; this is not market timing because the money-market fund is guaranteed to outperform the G fund (in the short term, and you could switch back). Separately, you prefer an intermediate bond fund to a money-market fund regardless of market conditions, because the bond fund offers a better trade-off between risk and return for money you won't touch in several years. Neither of those are market timing. No argument there. But your scenario was switching from G to F due to market conditions. Specifically, because the F fund has a better short-term expected return due to inverted yield curve. You stated that this would not be considered m...

Re: Leave TSP g fund ?
The reason this is not market timing is that the G fund is non-marketable. Switching between a money market and bond market fund to chase yields would be market timing. Hmmm. I fail to see the distinction. Both the G fund and money market funds have fixed dollar value. Even though the G fund bonds are technically non-marketable, they are based on the interest rates of marketable bonds, just like the securities in a money market fund. The main difference is that the money market is short term rates and the G fund is intermediate to long term rates. It seems like switching to the F fund from either a money market or the G fund is a market timing bet either way. Market timing is an investment strategy which depends on your ability to predict ...

Yes, EFT from the parent account is straightforward. The core position is SPAXX but it can be changed to FZFXX. There is nothing to "select" if you are ok with SPAXX. There is no ability to add checkwriting or bill pay that I have seen.
Also it looks like the ability to receive ATM fee rebates may continue after transitioning into a standard Fidelity account at age 18. This is not a normal feature of the Fidelity account, only CMA and Youth accounts.

I just read this report. In the securities lending section, it states the following: "A large portion of G Fund assets were moved into a cash equivalents account in order to preserve return on funds and maintain liquidity."
Can anyone explain what this means? I am actually surprised that non-marketable G Fund securities would be involved in lending programs in the first place. But I can't understand at all why G Fund assets would ever need to be moved to cash equivalents to meet liquidity demands when those assets mature daily. Or why moving G Fund assets into cash equivalents would preserve fund returns.

Prices as of February 2023 were 1.36 percent higher than September 2022 according to the BLS.MrJedi wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 6:40 pm It should be noted that the inflation/variable component of I bonds only looks back 6 months at a time (March and September readings). I do get the sense that inflation is slowing down compared to 2021-2022. Note that even if prices stay where they are at currently, that is actually considered 0% inflation. Comparing to prices 2+ years ago no longer is a valid reference point moving forward. The reference point is now September 2022. What are prices like now compared to September 2022?

Re: Tipswatch - Guessing I Bonds fixed rate, May 1, 2023
The inflation rate has been falling since June 2022, which is reflected in the current 6.48% I bond inflation rate and will be the reason that the next rate is even lower. What do you mean it "went up high" since May 2022?QuiGonJohn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 9:12 am If anything, since when I bought iBonds (May 2022) the inflation rate went up high AND prior and after the FED was raising interest rates, that is probably how I got the idea that if interest rates are up, then the iBond rate would also be up.

Re: Filing for a tax extension for IBonds refund
Wondering the same. I thought the IRS limit for accepting extension payments was two per year. If they will credit more than two per year via multiple processors that would be great.
