Re: Where do you put your cash?
I guess I am not a fan of cash. Over my 14 years of retirement, cash has averaged less than 2% of the portfolio - and today it amounts to less than 0.6%. I just can't get my head around loaning (or storing) cash for an expected return less than the rate of inflation. Dale If you are retired I guess a lot depends on how much steady cash flow you received. If SS and/or pension gives say 90% of your typical use, and you don't have too much variable use (car purchase, traveling), then cash on hand is of little importance. This is just a general observation. I don't know your particular situation. I'm not retired, but when I do I expect to have about 50% income and 50% savings/investment to cover spending. I feel a bit better at least starting ...

Re: Larry Portfolio Shortfall
As mentioned in an earlier post, these results do not include an advisor fee for the DFA funds. However, I can tell you from personal experience, that you can get much lower advisor costs then 1% of AUM. While there may well be lower fees available for those who know where and how to look, my experience has been that 1% of AUM is the norm. In fact, the article states that Larry's firm (BAM) actually charges 1.25%. That may be the case. I'm not trying to by coy, so those interested may want to look into an advisor such as Rick Ferri, as I recall, he charges about 1/4% of AUM. Or google "Fixed Fee Advisors" and DFA. However, DFA funds are certainly not necessary. A number of mutual funds and ETFs are good substitutes for DFA funds.

Re: Larry Portfolio Shortfall
My objection to the "Larry Portfolio" is philosophical. It is putting all your equity eggs in one basket, the small value basket. I believe in small/value tilting and I have done it with my own portfolio. I tilt but I still own Large stocks and Growth stocks. In other words, I am allowing for the possibility that I might be wrong. If I miss the mark of market performance, it won't be by very much. The "Larry Portfolio" is an all in bet on small value on the equity side. The data might be on Larry's side but I don't like betting on just one horse. I want more diversification. I'm with you on that. I have REITs and TSM as well as SV, ISV, and EMV. Also CDs and ST bonds as well as TBM. Less expected return, but a more dive...

Thanks for the link. Rick's article is a bit confusing, however, since he does not call HYG a bond ETF in the article. I had to check the link.
I read in a book by Dr. Bernstein that he recommends against having bonds as ETF. I have some VTIP ETFs I hold at Fidelity. I guess I could wait out the discount gap, but I'm thinking of just moving those over to Fidelity's short term government Spartan bond mutual fund.

Re: Internet storage and backup for Mac. Dropbox, iCloud, others?
For backup I use Crashplan. It works with our Macs and PCs. It is unlimited storage backup to the internet and happens in the background. Once set up it runs automatically. Also, if you delete a file the file still remains in backup (depending on Crashplan settings). Not all backup services do that. Their software also works to local hard disks. I have a 2 TB and 1 TB passport drives. For internet file storage I have Microsoft One Drive 1 TB. That is way overkill for me, but it comes free with my Office 365 subscription. That works fine for off site pictures and video storage. One Drive also backs up my iPhone pictures and videos. When back from a trip I take those videos and photos and organize them into folders on One Drive. If something ...

Re: How many Bogleheads tilt Value?
I'm not sure that Rick Ferri is currently a strong supporter of tilting, for the "casual" investor. Although, I think he personally had 30% in SV, which is a strong tilt. However, I do believe Larry Swedroe, who is a frequent poster and has written many books, is a strong supporter of small and value tilting. That is the basis of the equity portion of the "Larry Portfolio".
From polls I've seen, when polls were still supported on this website, most Bogleheads do tilt.
In my taxable account I use total market funds for tax efficient. In my retirement accounts I tilt small and value and REITs.

Re: MacBook Air - power issues
There have been a few threads here on battery life. Here is one on another Mac topic, but a sub-topic was battery. I've done some research. Apple claims that after a 1000 cycles you should still have 80% battery charge capability. Some things, however, are very hard on the battery. One is high temperatures. Another is allowing the battery is discharge down to zero (recommend is to keep the charge between 20-85%). Even keeping a battery at 100% can weaken it over time. I'm concerned since my Macbook is about 10 months old, battery health is 93% and cycles are 58. Now maybe the battery health versus cycles is not linear. But I am concerned. Now I try to keep the charge within the 20-85 range. I've download a free app from the app store called...

If you use Mint this is not support by Synchrony Bank and will not show up in Mint. 3. The wait time to speak to customer service was 30 minutes on average vs 2 minutes with Ally Bank. 4. If you are in a position to convert your tIRA to a Roth, and move the FULL amount of the conversion, then I think that could be a good move. That means you are paying your taxes from other funds you have in your taxable account. It gives you tax diversification. The means depending on your tax rate you can drive tax free money from the Roth or taxable money from the IRA. You need to analyze your tax rate post RMD versus what it is 62-70. This is where it gets tricky for me. We don't have after-tax money with which to pay the Roth conversion taxes. Corporates will have a higher correlation with equities. US Treasuries are probably best since they get a boost in a flight to quality as well as higher prices in an interest rate drop. Worst will probably be junk bonds due to their higher equity correlation.

For very liquid asset about the best you can do today is a "high yield" savings account. On-line Synchrony Bank is offering 1.05% savings account (or 0.85% with a checking account) or Ally at .99%. You can link the savings account to your bank (checking) account and transfer funds back and forth in a couple of days. Not great earnings, but better than most banks or money market accounts at investment companies.

Did you see a separate line item for a fee? I did not see a fee in the info you provided. Or perhaps it is just like buying/selling a stock or ETF with a spread between buy and sell. That could explain the initial drop. After that interest rates will determine the pricing.

I would describe that as Set It and Outsource It. Nice for advisors. Maybe or maybe not nice for clients.jjface wrote: There isn't a set it and forget it that doesn't involve someone else.

Re: Set It and Forget It Works!
I certainly could. But that would be Set It and let someone else manage It. Even then, I would have a lot of trouble to Forget It. My guess, at least for Bogleheads, is that we often prefer to maintain It.jjface wrote:You could always use a robo advisor to do that for you.Leif wrote:If I Set It and Forgot It I would not be enjoying the tax lost harvesting capital losses I've being using to save me taxes since 2009. Re: IPhone Financial stuff
I use the iPhone on vacation for photos and messaging, primarily. However, for an additional pound, I prefer to also pack an iPad for the larger screen. Easier to watch videos. If you just want to do financial transactions then just the iPhone would be fine. I would use cellular rather than WiFi for financial.

I think a succinct explanation of the small and value risk premia is the cost of capital story. If you were a bank, would you charge the same interest rate to a heavily leveraged company in a mature or declining industry or Apple? Would you charge the same interest rate to Exxon as you would to a small local oil driller in central Texas. I think that a Nobel prize was given for de,on starting that the expected return on an equity investment is the same as cost of capital. The market prices risk. Dave +1 If you own a company and you need additional capital do you issues more shares or borrow money? You will go to whichever source is "cheapest" for the company. Re: Office for MAC/iPad/iphone
I bought Office 365 with my new MBP. I got the University edition. That is a great deal if you qualify. You need a .edu email account. 4 Years for around $80. Plus I got 1 TB of storage on One Drive. Only problem was the download took forever. It allows two installations on Mac or PC.
I've got an iPad and iPhone, but I've not tried loading Office on those devices. iOS 8 ruined my iPad. It is too slow now to run anything.
