Re: Cost of college and 529
More like 18.8-23.8%. We're talking about rich folks, right?alfaspider wrote: ↑Fri Feb 01, 2019 9:54 am
At most, a 529 is going to save you 15% or so on your college expenses (obviously depending on your returns and tax rates when your kid is in college). A nice little perk, but not a game changer.
Say I am rich and my 529 grows to ten times my initial contribution. I withdraw all of it for qualified expenses and pay no taxes. I save 23.8% of 90% or over 20%. And no 0.3-0.5% tax drag along the way, so maybe my total is higher than it would have been outside a 529.
20% of a large number is a large number. Maybe enough to pay for a few years of college. Maybe enough to sustain the 529 for another generation.
Yes, for rich folks the 529 is quite the giveaway.

Re: Is California worth the premium?
We left fifteen years ago because of:
Traffic
Crime
Cost of living/taxes
Lower salaries
Mediocre public schools except in a few ultra high cost areas, which spoke to values
For me, lack of four seasons was a definite negative
A few other personal reasons which aren't for this forum
No regrets. Reached FI many years sooner, maybe decades sooner. Have enough to travel back any time we want but funny thing is, we don't want to. Last time we went to San Francisco we were appalled. We've moved on.
