If you are collecting Social Security benefits, then you need to be aware that the exempt-interest dividends (tax-exempt dividends) are included in one's modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) in order to determine how much of your SS benefits are taxed.

Whether you pay taxes or not depends on your total income. It is possible that you pay no taxes.

There is no way to predict the future, so no one can truly tell you if a fund will outperform a money market fund.

My spouse and I have different inherited IRAs. In them we each invest in a 60/40 target risk fund such as you have proposed. My spouse uses Vanguard LifeStrategy Moderate Growth fund VSMGX. The rest of our portfolio has an asset allocation of 60/40 as well, but uses individual funds and ETFs in a tax-efficient way to get to that asset allocation.

Re: Timing to sell mutual fund and buy EFT with proceeds

There is no way to avoid price changes unless you have some money on the side. 1. Put order in to sell the mutual fund. No matter when you put the order it, the fund will sell at the NEXT closing Net Asset Value (NAV) also sometimes called Price. You will not know this exact price until a few hours later. 2. If you have another pile of cash at least as large as the expected pile of cash from selling the mutual fund, then you can submit an order to buy about a minute or two before the market closes and the fund shares in #1 above are sold. The trade will happen instantly, so while it will be close in time to Step 1 above, it will not be exactly the same time. Of course, you can always give up on trying to do the best timing and should. If you are asking if Fidelity would have problems updating dollar amounts for outside assets, the answer is definitely Yes! So would Schwab.

I have accounts at Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab and others where I have added "outside" ticker symbols. None of them are ever 100% perfect.

Vanguard at least has started to acknowledge this with the following now presented on the Vanguard Portfolio Watch page:

I have the same portfolio entered at Vanguard, Schwab, and Fidelity. If they all show the same numbers, then I have more confidence that the numbers are close to correct.

Yes, there is a reason not to do this. In a word: Taxes. You need to figure out what you would pay in taxes to do what you want to do. I offer that your holdings have already got to be passively-managed, low-expense ratio, index funds, so there should not be much monetary benefit to do what you have proposed.

Nevertheless, you might proceed as follows:

Sell every share that has cost basis above current trading price for a loss. Then come back and show us what you got.

Going forward you can buy only VTI, VXUS and "bonds" while leaving your existing holdings untouched until you got everything figured out.

Well, in a few weeks she gets a letter from the SSA that says "Call your local office or we will not start working on your application." She calls and the worker says, "Nowadays you have to come into the office and show a photo ID or we won't start working on your application."

One should understand why TT wants that information. Do you pay state income taxes in many states? Would any of that "exempt interest" be exempt from state income taxes that you might have to pay?

Maybe stop using TurboTax to get a good handle on your tax situation? Then go back and use TurboTax after that.

For more help, maybe give the ticker symbols (if they exist) for the investment that paid tax-exempt interest/dividends. AND also give the names of the states that you have to file a state income tax return for.

OTOH, it is unlikely that we will ever have to pay 23.8% tax on realized capital gains because that's what wealthy people have to do. Sometimes people do not realize how wealthy they really are even if they grew up poor.

Re: Advice needed on Capital Gains

If over past decades that would mean before Vanguard had to keep track of your cost basis for you and that you are using Average Basis for the cost basis provided by Vanguard. Is that correct?

When filing a tax return, you will get at least the standuard deduction, so you will not pay tax on an amount equal to your standard or itemized deduction.

You can give your kids the shares directly without selling them. If they sell them, then they will pay the tax. If they have lower income than you, then it is possible that the taxes they pay from selling the shares will be lower than the taxes you would pay.

I do not know of any way to avoid paying that tax -- except for dying.

When did you make your first purchase of shares? If before 2012 then you should have your statements showing your purchases and how much you paid for them. (that is, your cost basis). If they are not on paper, then it might be a good idea to get them on to paper.

Amusing is how sports and government people are lauded, but also their wives. "She was a loyal wife" or "She was head cheerleader." One might think that Stephen F. Re: Best Accounts to Make Withdrawal for Cash

To be clear, I don’t think I have to tap all three of these options. My question is in which order would you withdraw from them? Clearly, the 401(k) loans have no penalty for use unless you lose your jobs or your company gets bought out and the 401(k) plan changes. Years ago my spouse took out a 401(k) loan and invested the money in 529 plans in order to save the expense ratio of a lousy 401(k) plan.
