Since my pensions & SS cover my living expenses I'm not concerned about losing my sources of income. I keep the equivalent of 9 months expenses in 2 savings accounts (1 pays 3% interest). I used to count I Bonds & CDs as part of my emergency funds but I now look upon them as part of my AA.

I am a 73 year old retiree. Wellesley Admiral is 37% of my portfolio. The 40/60 bonds to stocks ratio is quite appropriate for someone your age. The 3/5/10 year total returns are 17.3%/6.63%/6.85%. It has a 0.18 E/R. As I get older I intend to put more of my money into it. Another consideration for ...

WSJ - Active Funds are beating index funds

Mutual-fund managers who actively trade—and pile up fees in the process—have long been punching bags for investors. But suddenly they look like heavyweight champs. After being trounced by the stock market for years, so-called active managers are on a hot streak. In January, 70% of large-cap stock pi...

Isn't Rick suggesting market timing? Many retirees (like myself) want a buy and hold portfolio that stands up under all market situations and doesn't have to be played with and adjusted to suit changing market conditions. I'm 73, my AA is 35/65 and that is where it is staying.
