Re: Newly retired - Roth conversion and IRMMA help?

You can get an estimate of RMDs at
https://www.schwab.com/ira/ira-calculators/rmd

You'll need to calculate each parent's IRA+401+403 total. Then, for surviving spouse, do a single combined calculation. Be sure to scroll down to "See your future RMDs and plan ahead." Without Roth conversions, the surviving spouse at age 85 will need to take RMDs of ~$200-250,000/year.

Concentrate durability on things you touch - floor, countertop, faucet, handles. Avoid surface finishes on those items, such as laquered knobs or glazed ceramic. Pay for easy-to-maintain. On items that you mostly look at, avoid grease-catcher features such as indentations. Avoid adjoining surfaces that need different kinds of cleaning, such as glass & wood.

Oh, and watch out for pocket ripper handles.

If either you or your spouse is at any degree of risk for dementia, stroke, or a medical condition that could make the basic Activities of Daily Living difficult -- look into Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC). They are like an annuity for long term care & independent living. San Diego has some very nice CCRCs, but they would probably be cheaper in Vegas.

Re: How To Select a Cruise (Mediterranean, Spring/Fall 2023)

If you have ports you'd especially like to visit, double check how long the ship will be there. 10am to 3pm is barely time to see the dock area. 7am to 10pm -- or an over-night! -- is far more satisfying.

Spanish or another language, learned from a native speaker. Your child might not learn much vocabulary or grammar, but they will acquire the ability to pronounce the language, and get a sense for pauses and emphasis. It is very difficult to learn those after age 10 or so. Youtubes in the language you select can keep the language skills fresh.
