Re: American Funds Growth Fund vs Index

I suggest you use the Vanguard Cost Comparison Tool: https://personal.vanguard.com/us/FundsCostCompare It gives you an idea of the costs of holding 2 different funds of a given principal for a given number of years, using an assumed equal market return. Start out choosing American Fund’s Growth Fun...

Re: American Funds 401k Advise

I have both ANWPX and CWGIX. ANWPX has especially been a standout while I've held it. With American Funds it seems like the more funds, the better since it reduces your manager risk (already pretty low, but free lunch is free lunch.) I just try and spread them evenly around the globe.

Re: Just added Total Int'l Stock; add Total Int'l Bond too?

Boosting your fixed-income returns by taking on the credit risk of foreign governments seems silly to me - if your investment strategy calls for taking more risk, it probably gets paid better for it by buying more equities, rather than buying riskier bonds. As long as the risk is compensated, I don...

Re: Just added Total Int'l Stock; add Total Int'l Bond too?

International bonds seem like more of a no-brainer to me than international stocks. You get a little protection against dollar inflation, you get a little more risk and a little more yield. They help bonds suck less. Yesterday was a good example, where my US bonds lost .38% my internationals only l...

Re: American Funds 401k Advise

I've got all the ones your FA recommended and they've done fine. Morningstar Xray is great for American Funds. I would probably want a world balanced portfolio since American Funds seems to have a better advantage internationally. I don't recommend buying any bonds from American Funds, like others h...

Re: Strategy to sell a sought-after condo

Google FSBO in your state and find out what the legal requirements are and decide on how much work you want to do yourself and what you want someone else to do. We sold our last house in Colorado very easily. I found a real estate lawyer with a title company that specialized in assisting FSBOs. For...

Is there a chance that the "friend rate" they give you completely eliminates their profit, but they perceive your business to be higher margin and think you still made a little money off them even after the discount?

Here's a more apples to apples comparison in the same building. Buy for 200k plus $700/month condo fee, and ~$300 a month property taxes. http://www.har.com/5150-hidalgo-street-806/sale_29326995 Rent for $1800-$2,000 a month: https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_rent/Houston-TX/condo_type/28420288_zpid...

Where you can rent a 200k downtown condo with a $500/month HOA for $700? I think it will cost more like $2000/month. Anything $700 for rent in central Houston is going to be "edgy" to say the least.

Re: How to TLH if I bought big today?

I don't think you need to avoid a wash sale. You can create a wash sale and have the disallowed loss added to the basis of some the shares you purchased today. Then whenever feel like it, you can sell the shares purchased today to realize the loss and get the tax benefit. Thanks. So I'd just sell t...

How to TLH if I bought big today?

If you are counting separate accounts at the same bank as multiples, then my wife and I must have at least a dozen across 5 or so banks. As long as I'm not paying fees, I've never really considered it a problem.

It seems odd, but I chatted with Schwab and they verified. I would imagine it is for the same reason that you can transfer a Roth over to a Brokerage and that company can put money into your Roth as a bonus. I believe you were either mis-informed or mis-understood the advice given. I have the Schwa...

My biggest concern with the strategy is that once index funds have controlling interests in every public corporation, the billionaires will learn how to game the system. They'll learn how to manipulate stock prices and take companies private for pennies on the dollar.

UBS has a Visa Infinite card with a 100k points bonus if you get a 250k line of credit with the card. You can pay the yearly fee with 35000 points. If you spend 50k you get a bonus $500 credit for any airline lounge membership. United allows you to pay the fee for it's top end MileagePlus card with ...

It seems, to me at least, that taking full market risk for below market return would be generally a bad deal. If I was getting a rate so low that I could cover it with Treasury securities and still somehow skim a profit then i guess that makes sense. But I'm certainly not some sort of financial geni...
