Larry and Rick: An Appreciation

I would like to thank both gentleman for demonstrating year after year that it is possible for two reasonable people to debate from two different positions and still remain civil in their discourse. So often in everyday life on the national level people show repeatedly their inability to debate issu...

That is very easy....

In no particular order: Taylor, Mel, Larry, Laura, and Rick. And yes I have read The Book List of what we should read. But the fabulous 5 have taken the concepts and helped us to apply, interpret, and understand what we need. They are a very critical and necessary link in the chain of my understandi...

Thanks for the explanations and guidance. I know it looks simple to everyone else but I figured I had better ask just in case.

Bond Fund vs. Direct Treasury Paper Investment

Is it ok to just once every 1-2 yrs invest in treasury paper versus putting the money in a ST or IT fund? That way I don't have to pay expenses and worry about loss of price? Yes I read what Alec said and understand his point. Or put another way are there cost efficiencies of putting the $ in a fund...

So Larry is it possible

to say that by committing to a ST bond fund at say Vanguard that you are not worried about: 1) the yearly expense, even though low, of same or 2)the fact that if the interest rates change then the NAV or price (and therefore one's initial investment in the fund) could plumet? I mean in 20 yrs time a...

Doc, the I-bonds I have

were purchased 5 and more years ago when rates were higher. Since that time I have come to see the way the govt is handling the fixed rates for I-bonds, CPI, etc. and I don't find them to be reality based.

On the matter of TIPS

the points that you make are interesting Doc. And you know far more about this than I do. However there is another aspect to TIPS that concerns me and others and that is their rates. I mean take the way the govt chooses to fix the rates on the I-bonds. Roughly stated, they set the fixed rate where e...

ETFs

Well, I just found this quote on another thread running on ETFs on the forum right now... VBS will automatically reinvest your distributions (unless you specify otherwise) for no commissions on any Vanguard ETF and most other ETF's. I don't know of any ETF thus far where this isn't true. I can't vou...

Thanks Tom

I guess I could go with either short or intermediate Vanguard ETF bond funds but was wondering if doing so is preferable over a comparable Vanguard mutual short or intermediate fund. If I went with the ETFs I would do so as an investment in the long haul and with no intention of trading in and out. ...

Swedroe: A Winning Bond Strategy..

I am a 65 year old retired Diehard who is in a lower income bracket and who tries to keep things simple. While, on the one hand I hear people suggest putting my bond portion of my AA in the Total Bond Market Index, on the other hand Larry Swedroe has pointed out in a posting on 3.4.06 on the other D...
