Re: 2nd bad trans Honda Accord - next car? Subaru?

I guess we will look at cars without the CVT or VCM - they are too new really to judge. I just love my darn money, and I can't stand that we had to shell out so much on the Honda this week. Unexpected. Will check the Toyota Camry w/the V6 (we just test drove the 4 cylinder) also the Acura. Thanks al...

Re: 2nd bad trans Honda Accord - next car? Subaru?

quickfoot: Thanks, a lot of good information there. I have never heard of breakdown insurance - I will check into that. I would love to keep a car for at least 10 years, we only put about 127K on my Accord in 10 1/2 years. I'm just disheartened - writing a check for $2740 today ($2140 for the transm...

Re: 2nd bad trans Honda Accord - next car? Subaru?

Yes, I understand that, and as I was trying to say: the NEW problem was with the VCM on Honda's V-6 engine and according to the settlement the affected models are Accord 2008-2012. First, Not All Accord has V-6 engine. Second, this is not very NEW as the last affected model year is 2012 model. I was...

Re: 2nd bad trans Honda Accord - next car? Subaru?

According to Consumer Reports, the most reliable sedan is the Toyota Camry. So, far no CVT transmissions and no variable cylinder management technology. I'm a long term Honda guy, but I'm leery of the problems with VCM in the V-6 engine. I'm also a little leery of CVT transmissions, even though the ...

Re: 2nd bad trans Honda Accord - next car? Subaru?

Armeliuse: there is some NEW problem arising - not the transmission - I think engine related! So I'm a bit "gun-shy" but we could always get the extended warranty and trade in at 7 years. Bogglegrappler: We were totally not excited with the Camry, but we will test drive a Lexus (but the price!) Good...

2nd bad trans Honda Accord - next car? Subaru?

due to this wonderful community of Boglers I see the new Accords (V6) are problematic. We test drove a Subaru Legacy last night - I wouldn't rule it out but still am loving the Nissan mid-size vehicles. Any input would be most welcome. If you read my previous issue - we got Honda to pay for 55% of o...

I don't know, really! They love the Honda (which I will NOT buy again) and say the they see more Nissans in the shop for repair than Hondas. Hmm. Also they love Subaru's and Hyundai's. I may look at the Legacy but I really love the style and comfort of the Altima and Maxima. Do you own one?

Re: 2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

From what I've read they finally fixed the design defect in new transmissions, but it appears to still exist in the factory rebuilt ones ... which is what they're putting in your car. Unfortunately, Honda now has a new problem in their V6 models ... this time with the engine. The ones with variable ...

Re: 2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

hmmm. I will lhave to find out if warranty is transferable. If not, drive it for 3 years and not for long trips (which could screw up my early retiremnet plans) OR that's a good thought - if transferable, sell in about a year or less. I can't call the dealer again today - lol. It was a no-brainer to...

Not with this transmission and its problems. The rebuilt ones are failing repeatedly, prematurely, too. It appears that they didn't really fix the design defect. jimb jimb_fromATL Posts: 356 Joined: 10 Nov 2013 Location: Atlanta area & Piedmont Triad NC and I-85 in between. Private message Yes, I ag...

Thanks! I sure hope so! I know there will be tune-ups, etc. I think it will be cheaper in the long run to keep it awhile (3 years at least). Thanks all for your insights.

it wasn't low, but orangish - burnt. Won't let that happen again - going to be much more careful - thank goodness Honda came through with what they did or I would have been really down - hey - houses, cars - they are BIG investments.

do most of the routine maintenance on my vehicles myself. I drain and refill the auto trans fluid at every oil change as a best practice. While 50k or 100k miles are the generally recommended change intervals by the OEMs, I would love to hear how you plan to change all of the trans oil in one shot @...

result: Honda America will pay 50% got the dealer down - we will pay $2140 - 3 year warranty. I'm thinking drive the car - new tires, new timing belt and we'll get our money's worth for 3 years - engine good. Knock wood. It pays to go "higher". Now I have time to figure out what next new car will be...

Re: 2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

Per your owner's manual: "Replace [transmission fluid] at 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or 6 years, then every 90,000 miles (144,000 km) or 5 years." If I were Honda, I'd want to see your fluid change-out records which should have occurred sometime in 2012 or 2013 (5 or 6 years), based on the new (rebu...

Re: 2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

Most newer cars don't have scheduled transmission fluid changes until 100k miles. I once had a manual transmission car that supposedly never needed to have the transmission fluid changed. Have you tried an independent shop for a quote? I just took a quick look on ebay and a remanufactured transmissi...

Re: 2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

Since the thing seems like it was not due for changing, according to the manual, wonder what maintenance records related to the trans would they even be looking for? (I'm surprised the manufacturer is willing to pay anything, in any case, given that the car is 11 years old.) Sorry - I didn't address...

Re: 2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

can't imagine they would take the old fluid and put it in the new transmission, but maybe torque converter is separate and would have retained some of the old fluid? But anyway, usually a drain and refill does not change 100% of fluid either...maybe 1/3 to 1/2? Since the thing seems like it was not ...

Re: 2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

wow, thanks for that information. I felt so awful hearing we had not replaced it and haven't looked at the manual. They said they would initially, so maybe I have a chance and with a 3 year warranty - I would feel ok about spending $2500 (about). Thanks, can't wait to go home and check that manual.

Re: 2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

wouldn't even know how to go about that. my options are: 1. if Honda America will still pay 1/2 (even though we don't have transmission fluids records) I would go with them 3 yr. warranty. If they don't $4,700 - way too much (I think) 2. Go to a reputable transmission place and have them rebuild min...

2003 Accord - 2nd trans going bad - invested $$

Ok, help Bogleheads! I have a 2003 Accord EX-L V6 - 1st transmission went 2007 (44,000). Honda replaced. Now 127,000 their re-manufactured one is going. Honda Corproate said they wanted the maintenance records and I said "oh yes, it's been maintained" as husband and his mechancis took really good ca...

Re: How did you determine your "number" for retirement

You may not need as much as you think, although it's ok to have more, of course, but if you want to get out of work and retire early and enjoy life, consider this: Say your expenses are $60K a year and you expect to live another 30 years and you multiply 60K times 30 = $1,800,000. BUT, you don't nee...
