well, I can't pick a maturity date, since the need for cash depends on the real estate market which is always a crapshoot, and particularly so here in Arizona. Would I be wiser to get into a short-term bond index fund, rather than intermediate term? I think I remember reading that the increased inte...

fixed-term bonds vs bond funds?

I am consolidating funds for a house downpayment. I am considering buying shares of Vanguard Intermediate Bond Fund Index. In the course of talking to some folks, it was suggested that I buy fixed-term bonds (which I'm not familiar with) to mitigate risk associated with rising interest rates. Can an...

simple Q on Roth IRA and taxable income in retirement

OK, I understand the conventional wisdom is to fund 401k up to company match, then max out Roth IRA, because "taxes are historically low" But assuming I plan to make withdrawals after 59 1/2, won't my INCOME be historically low in retirement? Assuming I go from a well-paying full-time job to full-st...

so I am learning towards Intermediate-term bonds Tyler, I couldn't find it quickly, but somewhere on this site there is a statement by Noobvestor or Nisiprius that goes something like this: "Now I'm going to do my schtick, which is growth charts..." 10 year growth chart of desired fund here. "...no...

yes, I have a 401k at Fidelity. I'm not sure I understand this strategy - wouldn't withdrawing funds from my 401k subject me to an early withdrawal penalty? Did you read the Wiki link I gave you? There's no point in my reiterating what is capably described there. If you read it and don't understand...

I'm more inclined to get an account where I can make rolling contributions rather than a fixed-term CD. Where can I read more about bond funds? They sound pretty safe although not FDIC insured. Do you have a company plan with a stable-value fund? If so, then that could be an option. Unfortunately, it requires a substantial amount more in total in the taxable account. You'd use the techniques here: http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Placing_Cash_Needs_in_a_Tax-Advantaged_Account Other than tha...

mid-term options for downpayment savings?

I am looking at upgrading to a larger house at some point in the next 1-4 years. There is still a lot of volatility here in AZ with foreclosures dominating the market, so it's very difficult to predict how long we are in this cycle, and how quickly prices will recover. I am predicting a pretty slow ...

update: moved all my 401k assets into fidelity Freedom 2040 which suits my risk profile. I am a fan of simplicity! In your taxable account do you have gains or losses? It may make sense to take some of that taxable money to pay off the student loans as well as the car loan. This would free of cash f...

Re: Clarification

Am I correct when I say this is how your portfolio breaks down? 20% taxable 60% his 401k 20% her old 401k yes - exactly 2. In your 401k you list a lot of options but did not include expense ratios. Please go back and edit them to add the expense ratio. Just look at the two lowest cost options in ea...

need help getting my financial house in order

I came across this great site in researching 529 plans and have been reading up and I like the philosophy propounded here. I am getting my financial house in order – debt is under control but investments up till now were a haphazard mix of advice from family financial advisor and hunches. I did mana...

Tyler, I also notice that next to the column heading ER there are **. Can you tell us what this means? There is no explanation in the cut and paste chart you supplied. here is a screenshot of the portfolio options the actual ER is in the 3rd to last column. The last column is Morningstar's average of similar funds So the actual ER for a 500 index fund is 0.54%, not 1.28%. My wife worked for a small company who matched some contributions into a John Hancock 401k - I believe it is a "group annuity" type though I don't understand all the implications of that vs a Fidelity 401k which is what I have at my job. Anyhow, wife is a stay-at-home mom for the next 3-5 years so $...
