Re: RV purchase ?

The problem with ratings is that there is different "magic" included in some capacities but not others. Some include one 150lb driver; others include a 150lb passenger in every passenger position; others include nothing at all. It should be simple: tell us how much the SUV weighs empty (but filled ...

Re: RV purchase ?

Generally you can't even approach the tow rating without grossly exceeding one or more other limitations. Manufactures do a horrible job of describing the actual capacities of their vehicles. If you already owned the vehicle and trailer, what you would do is attach the trailer using the weight dist...

Re: RV purchase ?

I do agree that the problem with 6 people in a vehicle is gross vehicle weight - indeed you may be pushing the limits with today's slimmed down SUVs, which are no longer based on 3/4 ton trucks as they had been in the past. Also it depends on what you mean by a 5000lb trailer. My trailer was about ...

Re: RV purchase ?

While they might advertise 9300 lb, the reality is much, much lower. Put 6 people and their luggage in that Expedition and the real towing capacity will go down. Current F 250s can have a capacity of 15,000 lb. You might think this is overkill, but IMHO the rating is wishful thinking -- actual is m...

Re: RV purchase ?

If you go the trailer route, anything larger than a very small trailer should really be pulled by a full size pickup, and for safety a 3/4 ton truck (think F 250) is best. I don't know of any SUVs I would routinely tow a trailer with. Thanks for the thoughtful pointers. Regarding Pickup vs SUV, I k...

A big question is where are you going to park the RV when you are not using it? A lot of towns will not let you park it in your yard, driveway, or on the street. Storage lots are not free.

Certified BMWs are very cheap. You can get a 30k miles certified 3 series for between $15k and $20k. A certified 7 series can be had for $40k.

The downside is potentially high repair costs
