Good stuff. Income Tax in NC is between 7 and 8 percent -- so converting a large number could be worth it. I have to weigh that against the potential of appreciation from where it is now. I'd rather pay a higher percentage now, than a lower percentage later on a much larger number.

What are her income needs from this portfolio? If she had to take a 0% withdrawal for a couple of years is that undoable -- or is this money for going to the grocery store and paying the heating bill? Just remember that there are benefits to owning an ESA over a 529. If you only have a few years worth of contribs in your ESA, you may as well keep it there and start a fresh 529. For example, an ESA can be used for private secondary schools and (and this one is the kicker) any type of educational e...

Very interesting. I've been doing some reading about insurance this week as part of my CFP curriculum. As I read the part about umbrella policies, I thought to myself that I would only need coverage up to the amount of my net worth (and future increases). However, the book pointed out that for a you...

Hey Steve: I just wanted to say thanks for organizing the meeting yesterday. It was lots of fun to meet you guys and to bask in our boglehead nerd-dom. :-) Seriously -- it is nice to meet some folks who can carry on a conversation at that level. I also find it fascinating that 2 out of 5 of us are p...

Will there be a sign on the table saying "Bogleheads" or something? Might be a good idea.

See you guys tomorrow.

Thanks,

Dan
