I'm glad to see some renewed interest in this thread and we have several new members to our "Team Bogleheads" on Kiva as a result of that. Here are some stats: Since our team inception Jan 4, 2011, Team Bogleheads has lent $11,725 through 454 loans. There are 29 members -- so that averages...

You can pursue both paths.
Start putting some feelers out, go to some networking events, but don't go into full "job-hunt" mode.
In your current job, look for ways to break out of the blahs. On the other front, you may just stumble into something you never even thought of.

Re: "Roll Your Own" Longevity Insurance (i.e. Deferred Annuity)?
The short version is that if you think of a deferred annuity as fire insurance to protect against living beyond age 85, 90, 95 -- it could be effective risk pooling. A problem with this that if you are 65 and buy a deferred annuity that starts at 85 then you will still need to fund a 20 year retire...

Why not just wait until you are 85 and see whether living to 100 seems possible. Buy a SPIA then if you want longevity insurance. Maybe I'm missing something. I've been thinking a lot recently about the benefits of longevity insurance (i.e. a deferred annuity that pays off in the unlikely event that I reach age 90 and pays until death). Pack little "gifts" that you open up every hour or so. Depending on the ages, this can be as simple as a box of tissues. When we had babies, that was something that they could play with for a while. Look for other dollar store stuff that they can open, make a mess, play with, explore, etc....

Perhaps worth it, but not if you have to stop practicing to do it. You may be able to do nights and weekends in an Executive MBA program.
We had at least 1 MD in my executive MBA program. His goal was similar to yours -- and I think he got some benefit from it.

The answer about asking yourself if you would take 4% as an investment is a good way to look at it. But you also have to consider the affect of taxes on both the mortgage and an investment. Another idea is to take a 15 year mortgage -- which is probably 3% if you shop it. After taxes, your hurdle wo...

I've played those sort of games in the past, but I don't think it is typically worth it. In this case, you'll have to pay off that $200 in the next billing period -- maybe before you need the gas. I'd take a different approach. If you have reached 2x your "number" then why not protect that first half by utilizing ultra safe assets. (Perhaps TIPS, CDs, etc., that spin off the cash you need to live.) You may even need to increase it a little to make up for the lack of return (dependin...
