Re: Estimated Taxes

FiveK,

That is the strategy I use (though not to such an extreme), but definitely back loaded.

Re: An HSA Account as an Investment Vehicle

Puxor,

Yes it is a great idea to use an HSA for investment.

You need to be enrolled in a high deductible health plan to be able to contribute to one. Is your health plan a high deductible plan?

Re: What to do — forgot to file gift tax for 529 plan contribution

ericinvest, Not a tax expert, I did similar contribution in 2011, did not know that I had to file Form 709 till last year, so filed the 2011 form last year using the 5 year ratable with explanation. I have not heard from the IRS so I am guessing they are cool with it. If I were in you place, I would...

workerbee,

I like FTIPX over FSGDX for the same reasons you came up with (small cap exposure, large number of stocks). I use it in my IRAs.

Re: Employee Stock Purchase Plan - is this even valuable/worth it?

You need to be disciplined about the selling immediately part. In my pre-bogleheads days, I would not pay attention and keep the stock and take unneeded risks, which is a no-no.

uclalee,

This is allowed in my state's 529 plan. You need to check your state's plan.

Re: Help with Tax Loss Harvesting

invstar, Your plan looks good. Please make sure you don't make any trades in VTSAX and VSIAX for 30 days after you execute the TLH trades. If the 1/16 VTSAX lot had a profit instead of a loss, and you decided to keep it, and just sold the 1/29 lot, then you will not be able to take the loss on it im...

Re: Help with Tax Loss Harvesting

The OP is not selling and moving into cash. He/she is selling, realizing a loss so that it can be used to reduce taxes, and then moving into similar funds without violating wash sale rules. His asset allocation remains (mostly) the same and is able to reduce taxes.

Re: Help with Tax Loss Harvesting

From a capturing the tax without a wash sale perspective, it is Ok. But because the % of International stock in your portfolio would go down and the % of domestic stock would increase, you would be doing a TLH and a rebalancing at the same time. If that is your intent, great. But if you are just doi...

Re: Help with Tax Loss Harvesting

invstar, Assuming you have not done any transactions in these or similar funds in your other accounts (401k, IRAs, any other taxable accounts), you can TLH. Because you are trying to TLH both funds, if you sell VTIAX and buy VSIAX or vice versa, you may be doing a wash sale which defeats the purpose...

Re: 0% 18/MO.Balance Transfer w/2% fee

This is Ok if some conditions are met (for me atleast). The amount has to be small (<5%) relative to portfolio. One is methodical about setting up auto payments for each month and track the final date for paying it off closely. Are able to definitely payoff the balance before the intro offer ends fr...

TLHed IXUS to IEFA for $500 today, first TLH ever, thanks to what I have learnt from the members on this forum.

Would like to TLH REITs but they are in IRAs :-) so nothing can be done.

Re: 401K HCE Options

The OP contributed 16000 but because he/she was an HCE, and the 401k plan likely failed the ADP (avg deferral percentage) test, which is an IRS test to compare 401k contributions by those who are not HCE versus those who are HCE, the plan returned (distributed) 10000 since he/she can only contribute...

Re: My boneheaded financial mistakes

Did not contribute to 401k despite a 6% match (for 2 years). By the time I got wiser to a 401k's benefits, employer fell into bad times (tech bust of 2000) and match was gone. Lost money in dot-com stock bust after day trading. Friend told me the S&P was supposed to take off. If it was going to take...

There is also free installation till 11/22 at costco which saves about $60 more.

I am in a similar situation, buying the Bridgestone Ecopia ep422 plus for a 2013 Prius. Have these on DW's non Prius. Noise hasn't bothered me maybe I run the radio too loud :-).

If she is not comfortable with stock funds, she can direct the money into stable value funds or bond index funds temporarily while she can educate herself on investing. If she contributed 18k per year and needs to withdraw it, she will pay taxes plus...

Re: IVV and FSTVX

Why not ITOT? lower exp ratio of 0.03%, broader coverage than IVV. I am assuming these are currently in a tax advantaged account, if not, you may have to deal with capital gains taxes.
