Ditto on the 5-10 year horizon for Total market index fund.
My risk profile is such that I might consider Vanguard Balanced Index Fund 3-5 years.

looks like FIFO could be the default method if you opt out of AVG Basis so just subtract the ST shares from the total and the rest by FIFO should be LT.
