DW has a 2016 X5, and loves it... she had an MDX prior and has let me know she wouldn’t go back to the Acura over the BMW. We haven’t had one problem with the car to date. The N55 engine is well known, and seems to be trouble free, at least on the BMW forums, and the ZF transmission is bullet proof....

You want to start contributing to your traditional 401k now, just for the tax benefits. Every dollar you contribute up to the $18k max is a dollar deduction to you taxable income, at the federal level. Have you had a chance to read the forums Wiki?

Ultimately, the only way to avoid the taxes is to reduce your taxable income, and you have already taken care of the obvious ways to do that. It appears that this may be the first time for a bonus of this magnitude, but that may become the "new normal," at least for the following tax year...
